So units can't be dropped that aren't in the book because it might effect balance but units that might be in the book that might effect balance must be included - can you really have it both ways?

I think the khornate IW would be best represented by a Siege assault formation - perhaps following assault marines stats (minus jump packs)

When I did my IW armylist ine of the main problems I had was balancing its siege elements. Its very difficult to have trenches, emplacements etc and all strong assault units as you just end up with heavily entrenched onjectives with strong assault formations moving forward - which is a very strong combination.

In the end I went for minimal fortifications - emplacements which could be bought for artillery at the expense of their movement, but nothing to dig troops into

I knew someone would say that...
:(

Why invent a new unit when there's already something available that works?
Talk about making life hard for one's self...

Now you see I think an Iron Warriors list that had Leman Russ in it as suggested above would be really cool and in theme.

I think having Khorne Berzerkers in the list is just Mary-Sue, and makes the list look bad.

You keep saying the same thing (what is Mary-Sue anyway  :sulk: ) without accepting that there are valid reasons for the list looking like it does.
There have been no game breaking or earth-shattering reasons not to include Bezerker units as representative of Kroeger's company.

"Kroeger had picked these killers personally; they were the most blood-soaked berserkers of his grand company of the Iron Warriors' those who had trodden the path of Khorne for longer than most."
pg 26.

Please give it up guys. Using Khorne Berzerker units (even if they are really proxies) in this list is completely in keeping with the lists source material.
I wasn't really being serious about the Leman's but it would be cool to see some Chaosified Russ' rolling across the game board...

I think anyone wanting to coment further on this list should read Sorm of Iron first, otherwise how can you have an informed view?
This may seem harsh but it's fairly black and white to me.

Mary Sue - Wikipedia.

"A Mary Sue (sometimes just Sue), in literary criticism and particularly in fanfiction, is a fictional character (or in this case, army list) with overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as wish-fulfillment fantasies for their authors or readers. Perhaps the single underlying feature of all characters described as "Mary Sues" is that ... the author seems to favor the character too highly"

This may seem harsh but it's fairly black and white to me.

It's very black and white to me that this list looks like a 'Khorne Marines with Basilisks' army list, and not an Iron Warriors army list.

Where is the Iron Warriors' reliance on technology and artillery?
Where is their Chaos Leviathan?
Where is their Harbinger bomber (a perfect Siege-cracker), when the Iron Warriors are known users of Bombers?

If you want some Khornate Iron Warriors then why is there a World Eaters 'Maelstrom of Gore' in there, instead of a new Khorne-blessed Iron Warriors unit type?
Why are there Spawns, when the Iron Warriors seek to extinguish mutation from their ranks at all costs?

As regards list balance, the Siegelord looks to be a waste of points, it has worse ranged firepower than a Warhound Titan, and it's too slow to reliably make contact with the enemy (your Siegelord is more CC focused than a Banelord Khorne Titan). Try building a Titan that has a focus on ranged bombardment, designed to shatter fortifications with a pair of Quake Cannons or something, with transport as a secondary consideration.

Or as I said before, as the Iron Warriors are known for being more integrated with Chaos Titan Legions than any other CSM Legion, why not have a couple of different Warlord/Reaver/Warhound configurations available to them?

All interesting points E&C.

I'll leave it to BL to take his list further but I really hope that he sticks to the Storm of Iron look as, let's face it, it is a great read and I(and many others I'm sure) want to be able to recreate that kind of army for Epic.

Cheers,
Steve.

A lot to digest.

The Spawn is actually an oversight and will be removed.

@Maelstromof Gore: I liked the name and it is the only official name for a Berzerkers warband. But replacing it with a Khorne minded non-WorldEaters formation has merit.

@LemanRusses: Hmmmmmm :)

@Chaos Leviathan: Huh? Never heard of this. And will it fit? It is a mobile command centre and not a siege engine. Termites, Moles and Hellbores would fit more but tunneling devices aren't mentioned in the book.

@Steve54: Well actuall Iron Warriors ar infamous for being string in assaults and strong in the defence. I see no problem in this as long as the formations are pointed accordingly.

@Titans: Well the Siegelord is big and well shielded. It has time to reach the walls to breach/storm them (but perhabs i will up its shields to 9). It is designed as a walking siegetower/ram.
Besides i came up with ideas for siege themed Reavers and Warhounds.
And i see Titans as to mobile to be stationary artillery pieces. To shell enemy fortresses from adistance there are several other things good for.

But well i could make a non specified IronWarriors armylist.

Having read the book how many blood soaked madmen are we talking about? It came accross to me as this mans personal guard or squad, not a retuine. indeed they were focused on because their commander was a named character otherwise they seemed a very small element of the army.

Leman Russes: Hmmmmmm

If you did want Russ I recomend using one of the older models. 1st edition for elegance or one of the 2nd edition early ones for cheapness (actually stick with 1st edition).

@Steve54: Well actuall Iron Warriors ar infamous for being string in assaults and strong in the defence. I see no problem in this as long as the formations are pointed accordingly.
Take it from someone who may have played over a 100 (maybe 200) games involving fortifications. You have to be bad at one or the other. If good at both it is impossible to point as you have to make them so expensive they lose as otherwise what happens if someone just does an extreme army?
But all is not lost. I suggest having a fortification upgrade of trenches, barbed wire, maybe minefields. Why trenches? At a 5+ save they don't give much to iron Warriors beyond the -1 to hit.
If you want a command bunker make a warsmith detachment that deploys with one (maybe at the blitz). Nice 3+ save for 3 units, so not overpowering and you can go to town on it making it look like something special.

And i see Titans as to mobile to be stationary artillery pieces. To shell enemy fortresses from adistance there are several other things good for.

WSith the easy availablity of missile launcher armed reavers a fire support version of one of them would be good (fire control tower, two lot of rocket launchers).

But well i could make a non specified IronWarriors armylist.
I think you should consider a generic one and save the story specific units for a set of scenarios from the book.

Overall though you need to decide is this the iron Warriors garrison army or the Iron Warriors siege breaking army. one is assault from prepared postions, the other is stay in and occassionally sally a bit.

Actually, I'd say a retinue of berzerkers would easily be justified by the book. Maybe it could be 1 per x number of points to limit a whole swathe of Khorne Berzerkers that some seem to fear we would want to use.

I've used a twin Quake Cannoned/Carapace Landing Pad Reaver (E&C's AMTL list) and it is a beast as artillery (although a bit hit and miss against Reiforced Armour). I think it would work well as an Iron Warriors unit (if a little expensive).
In fact, I'd love to see a Chaos version of the AMTL list one day...  :alien:

Unless the ERC sees fit to ask me to write it, it's not in my remit as Mechanicus Champion to do so.
