Well, I was finally able to get in an "EPIC: Siege" playtest in.  Pitting the Mossinian Rebels against, relatively, normal Space Marines.

I apologize that I'm only posting the army lists right now, I've got to head out to play some Call of Cthulhu this evening...  :ghost:

Battlefield:

4x6; Space Marines chose long edge deployment.

Deployment:

Terminators were kept in reserve.

Whirlwinds were transported in the Landing Craft, aboard the Strike Cruiser, along with the Tactical Detachment and both Devastator Detachments; with the Strike Cruiser scheduled to arrive Turn 1.

Space Marines garrisoned all three Scout Detachments, with two on overwatch.

Mossinians garrisoned both Light Tank Platoons, both Sniper Platoons, both AA Batteries, both Rough Rider Platoons, Infantry Companies 1 and 2, and the Heavy Tank Platoon.  Snipers 1 and the Heavy Tank Platoon were put on overwatch.

Remaining deployment as shown:

Here's the Mossinian fortified area from another angle:

Turn 1

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Space Marines

Without warning, the Sword of Fury unloads its deadly cargo upon the rebellious Mossinians!

The Orbital Bombardment targets one of the forward Bunker areas; Infantry Company 1 and Rough Riders 1 are hit, eliminating one unit from each formation.

The Landing Craft comes down near the front of the Cathedral, deploying Marine artillery

And then come the Drop Pods… and it’s a debacle!

All the Drop Pods are targeting the same general area, but drift and enemy zones of control funnel them all to the same place… right in the middle of the Mossinians’ guns!

The Tactical Detachment is first on the ground; their Deathwinds put Blast markers on the Heavy Tank Company, the Tactical Missiles, and Infantry Company 1.  As the Marines disembark, the Ragnarok tanks bark out on overwatch, catching the Imperial troops in a crossfire that fells four of them, including the Commander!  Broken, the remaining Tacticals actually have no place to flee to and are destroyed!  (I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen before!)

Devastators 1 lands upon the smoking remains of their comrades and their Deathwind is able to take out a single Firestrike Launcher, breaking the formation.

Devastators 2 lands nearby, taking out a Ragnarok tank.  Not an auspicious beginning to the Marine assault…

Without a commander to lead them, the Marines attack piecemeal, with Devastators 1 engaging the intermingled Heavy Tanks and Infantry Company 1, with the support of Devastators 2.

The initial attack only sees one Ragnarok taken out, while two Devastators go down!  Support fire cuts down another Ragnorak and two Infantry… and the Marines win by “1â€Â

Turn 2

The Terminators arrive in the ruins near the Mossinian HQ.

Strategy Roll: Space Marines

The Whirlwinds advance and fire on the rebel HQ and take out 2 Infantry and 1 Rapier.

The Terminators follow-up by engaging them, staying out of line of sight of the nearby Snipers… and tear the Mossinians apart!  No rebels survive to tell the tale and the victorious Terminators move slightly towards the Mossinian Blitz.

Sniper Platoon 1 sustains fire on Devastators 2, eliminating two Devastators and breaking the survivors.

Rough Riders 1 gallops up to engage the Whirlwinds… they wipe out the Marine tanks, but the loss of one of their members breaks them and they flee around the Cathedral.

Scout Detachment 2 advances to bring AA Guns 1 into range and takes out one gun, breaking the rest.

The last Ragnarok advances to bring the broken Devastators 1 into a crossfire, takes out the Dreadnaught and the last Devastator unit disbands.

Infantry Company 1 sustains fire on Scouts 3, taking out two of their Razorbacks!

Scout 3 then doubles forward, stretching out with scouts coherency and fire on Infantry Company 1, taking out 1 Infantry.

The Landing Craft then arcs around to land on the Mossinian Blitz and engages Infantry Company 1 in a clipping assault!

The rebels lose two Infantry and a Mortar to fire and support… and then three more Infantry as the Marines win and push them back, and the lone Ragnarok breaks.

Light Tanks 1 advance on Scouts 2 and puts a Blast marker on them.

Scouts 1 double up to the edge of the razorewire and fire on the broken Infantry Company 1, causing one unit to flee in panic.

Infantry Company 2 double into the woods to fire on Scouts 2… doing no damage.

Mossinians on overwatch... stay on overwatch...

End of Turn

The Landing Craft stays landed.

All Marines rally.

No broken Mossinian formations rally.

(End of Turn 2 photo didn't turn out)

Turn 3

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Space Marines

The only Marine unit to survive the drop zone massacre, the Dreadnaught of Devastators 2 sustains fire on the nearby Snipers 1… and takes out 2 Snipers!

Scouts 1 then engage the broken Infantry Company 1, they race through the razorwire, losing a Razorback to the entrenchments…

…and manage to only kill a single Infantryman!  The Mossinians still do worse and do no damage to the Marines.  The Scouts win… but the Preacher’s unit still survives! (My opponent has some strong comments about this, I’ll discuss it after the report.)  The nearby broken Ragnarok and a unit from Infantry Company 3 also abandon the rebellion.

Infantry Company 2 then engages Scouts 2… their daring attack costs them three Infantry, but the Marine Scouts are completely wiped out.

Scout Detachment 3 doubles back to guard Mossinian Objective 2.

Sniper Platoon 1 tries to march… but fails and breaks!

The Terminators march up near the Landing Craft to secure the Mossinian Blitz.

The Landing Craft then goes on overwatch, becoming a fortification of its own!

Sniper Platoon 2 marches into Marine territory.

Light Tanks1 marches towards to contest the Mossinian Blitz… they lose a tank to the entrenchments… and another to the Landing Craft’s overwatch fire… and it’s all over for the Mossinians…

End of Turn

The Landing Craft stays landed.

All Marines rally.

No broken Mossinian formations rally.

Score:

Mossinians 0 (none) vs Space Marines 2 (Blitz, BTS) – Moderate Space Marine Victory!

Rough Riders are only avaiable as an Upgrade for 1.13... never mind though because the list was still 95% the same.

Thanks a dozen for the report, a 2-0 victory doesn't seem too skewwed so far...

Intruiging report. So essentially, despite having a significant disadvantage in formation activations the Marines were able to exploit the relative imobility of the Mossinians, breaking formations before they could react.

And the comments on the Preacher?

I think it was more my opponent exploiting my inexperience with a fairly static army... much more used to Nids or Eldar style play... *laugh*  But, yes, the Marines did quite well, and I could've set up my defenses better... hadn't really fully considered the "funneling" aspect of ZoCs and drop pods when I set up my stuff.

And the comments on the Preacher?

WARNING - Harsh opinions follow:

My opponent thought they were ridiculous.

When we first were getting ready to play, my opponent said, "This army just looks like a Siegemasters-knock-off."

After we'd played, had a debrief, and he'd read over Siege, his response was, "This army just looks like a Siegemasters-knock-off, with better options!  Why would anyone choose to play Siegemasters if the Mossinian list was allowed?"

Re: Preachers - "So, you're trying to tell me, a rebellious PDF, on a minor, back-water planet is able to produce multiple dudes who are as elite as Commissars, in the same numbers, *and* can equip them with power weapons?!  That's ridiculous."

Re: The Mossinians - "It's like someone wanted better Siegers but not to call them Siegers... even the Break the Spirit rule is the same... but they get three choices of support, better armoured tanks, and [freaking] Sniper Squads... as many as they want!  This is just stupid.  If you're going to make a new army, don't just make a better copy of one that already exists."

Re: The Story - "So, basically, 'A wizard did it.'  That may be one of the most disappointing things I've read in the 40k universe... these guys rebelled cuz they wanted to die *more* for the Emperor than they were allowed... so they formed a democracy to force the issue?!  It doesn't even make sense... except that a Tzeentch cultist somehow made them do it?  WTF?"

Re: Death Corps - "Looks pretty wicked, wish they'd been in Swordwind like originally planned... and at least it's different from any other Guard army."

Re: Art - "Pretty awesome what fans can do, that cover is rocking.  Wish the enemy force was something more inspiring for an inner cover."

Re: Overall - "I certainly wouldn't buy this... it's got, basically, one new army and 'photocopies with white-out' of two already released armies... hope GW doesn't sue."

So, this was all from a guy who doesn't frequent the forums, but is an avid EPIC player; sorry if it was harsh, but I thought an "outside" opinion might shed some light on things.  Re-reading over the Mossinians list after our chat really made me ask, "What *is* the point of releasing the Mossinian army?"  Is it just supposed to be an "expanded and updated" Siegemasters list, because almost all the changes simply make it better than the "original"... I'll bring up specific points in the Dev forum.

Look at the thread "Epic Siege v1.12" for my comments.
