I play it. It's a cracker of a game and very addictive. The ships and weapon option are pretty extensive (from frigates, cruisers, battleships). You've got loads of careers. Here's a few:
Pirate - pray on others in low sec
Bounty Hunter - Hunt people for cash
Business man - manipulate the markets to make isk
Builder - build things from ammunition to mighty space stations
Miner - a dull profession where you chew rocks
However, the game is very unforgiving. The learning curve is huge:

Pretty much expect to be destroyed, scragged or otherwise scattered across the starscape within your first week of play and you will loose your ship.
Oh, and there is one rule in eve that you should stick to:
Don't fly what you can't afford to loose!

More of a current misconception which seems to be that every army in Rogue Trader consisted of 2 squats with toughness 15 force fields and homing autodestructive 50" blast vortex missiles on jetboards...
