I really dont think that we need a slow firing AA unit as it just adds more complexity to the list.

Ok, I was going to let this slide, but it keeps coming up. The original proposal had nothing to do with slow firing. Period. That was something that another proposed and it really has turned into a red herring.

Neither the Skyray nor the Stingray are slow firing, so the logic behind adding this feature just because one vehicle was borrowing some stats from another is beyond me.

The original intent was to explore the possibility of consolidating roles of two similar chassis, using some of the 40K abilities as justification, and possibly simplifying the Epic list.

I think Ginger has an interesting idea about this, but since there doesn't appear to be any interest in going down this route, we can move on as far as I am concerned. I like my Stingrays just as much as a lot of you.

Sorry for derailing the thread with slow-fire :D

What i was to say is that i support the addition of an AP value to the SkyRay's Seeker Missiles for the reasons stated abover by me.

After looking at the current stats of the SkyRay i would suggest:

2 x Twin Seeker Missiles 60cm AP5+/AT5+/AA5+ Guided Missiles

Perhaps there is another way of looking at this suggestion. Rather than having two separate sets of stats akin to the Predator Destructor and the Predator Anahilator, is there any merit in considering the two models as variants of a single vehicle with different battlefield roles like the Dreadnought?

This would result in a single vehicle with stats containing either weapons A&B or weapons C&D etc, and could simplify the upgrade paths - or is that too simplistic?

*face-palm!*  Why didn't I think of that years ago when I proposed the Stingray?!?  It would make life a LOT easier and save on some conversion headaches (Note that I'm still going to do the 40k scale Stingray, but that may take a while).

That would lead to the Skyray with EITHER 2x 60cm AA5+ and 1x (improved ATGM stats), OR improved APGM and improved ATGM.  *I'd* still want a different turret, but all you'd really need to tell the different versions apart would be two different paintjobs!

=====

For the record, it should be AP4+/AT5+/AA5+ (AP missiles already hit on a 5+ unguided), and I really don't like Guided MIssile for AA units.  That either makes a 30cm AA unit or the entire Tau army has AA, If there's a ML in the formation and the outer edge of the formation is within 60cm of the closest Skyray.  This adds a huge wrinkle to the Tau's AA coverage, and Skyrays should be on par with the Eldar Firestorm for AA threat (ie, nastiest ground AA unit in the game).

Has anyone played with Guided AA? Am I over-reacting here or does Guided AA truly severely nerf the ground-based Tau AA?

Well there is always the solution of a Seeker Missile pool from which Markerlight units can draw upon :D
This would make every Markerlight unit a 30cm AA unit. Number of shots per game (or turn) would be dependant on the number of SkyRays in the army (say 2 per SkyRay, destroyed SkayRays would then substract this number from the pool).
The SkyRay itself could fire one Guided Missile from itself (itself has a Markerlight) and its secondary weapons. Every other Markerlight unit can fire it's weapon and one Guided Missile from the pool at targets within range (that's 30cm from the Markerlight unit).

I really don't think the AA missiles should be guided.  I just don't see the typical Pathfinder being able to track an Eldar flyer with his hand held Markerlight.  My suspension of disbelief has limits.

Thats why the Skysweep Missile Defence Wing has a Devilfish attached to it wich has a Networked Markerlight. The Devilfish traks enemy aircrafts connects to the Markerlights of the SkyRays in the Defece Wing and fires the selected number of Seeker Missiles at the aircraft/s.
