The above is a quick test i've just done for my ToTW thread, skull white undercoat, goblin green carapace, blood red claws; i reckon the green and the red could be less bright. I am using a wood dye as a dip; have i got this right? Is there something better i can use or that other people use?
Do people usually apply any highlight before dipping?
Any suggestions for improvment?
Appreciated,

Looks good to me. I've yet to use dip but with the GW washes I've always gone for a bright first coat that is then dulled by the wash. I've not bothered to highlight afterwards, my standards rise to tabletop gaming and not beyond  :p

I was originally going to use dips for my own tyranids as well. Unfortunately I couldn't find any dips at an affordable price here, so in the end I stuck with the old fashion techniques.

That test piece looks great to me. I wouldn't bother with any highlights as long as you use fairly bright basecolours. Can't wait to see more

I've highlighted before I've washed my minis and after, it depends on the look your going for. The the 'nids, I recommend before as they don't need to look as clean as say marines.

I never used a dip, I'd recommend the Citadel washes or the Coat d'Arms counterparts though. Coat d'Arms also has Super Shaders. I believe there meant to be acrylic dips.

I would use the citidel washes opposed to a dip at this scale. Even at 40k scale I've been very unimpressed with dipped units and the dips used usually makes it very difficult to strip them should you wish to repaint. Just get a large brush and run over the infantry with delvan mud, badab black, or the sepia and you should get the effect you want. I'd recommend the black or mud first off to tone down the bright colors a bit.

Your end result looks good MOK.  Just change your base color or your primer color if you want it to come out less bright.  You can definitely highlight and then dip since dipping 6mm infantry is not going to give you the same level of shading that you would get on larger models.

I've done a fair amount of dipping and there are many ways to go about it.  It really boils down to what medium you prefer and how much you want to spend:

1. You don't need money: Army Painter's Quick Shade line.
2. You need money for food: Miniwax Polyshades
3. You need money for food & beer:  Future Floor Finish (Pledge)

Personally I like Miniwax for larger models because it is frikkin bulletproof once dry and you can get great results.  At 6mm, I'd definitely thin it with white spirits some prior to dipping.  If you dont like glossy, then you'll need to give your models a shot of Krylon Matte/Dullcote.

Future is basically ghetto acrylic gloss medium with a snappy smell.  You can thin it with water, color it with paint & ink.  Citadel Washes fall into this category as they are basically just paint+ink+acrylic medium. If you dont like glossy, then you'll need to give your models a shot of Krylon Matte/Dullcote.

Cheers, i'll do a couple more test with this scheme but try toning down the 'festive' feel; if that doesn't work i'll experiment with inks/other dips.

yeah..just the big round thing in the middle of it all, well, maybe that and another one of the smaller pieces to go inside it...
i'll see what sort of price the auction creeps to; unless you have either of those pieces going spare?!

Honestly? I think they look a little 'festive' with those colours... I think if you used Liche purple instead of the green, you'd have a better scheme (plus, they're colours that cover fairly well).

The dip looks good to me though, and yes, usually one uses a tinted woodstain/varnish.

I don't, I just saw the post and decided to look them up since I didn't know what they were, and ebay seems to be the place to find em.  And then I decided to go ahead and buy a copy of the box set.  I need to quit going to ebay.

RIght; tried the purple; the only purple i've got is an old tub of Warlock; it's too close to the red in my opinion:

I also wanted to see what the original scheme would look like on termagants and so ended up with this; darker green chitin this time round.

I'm worried about how this scheme would would on the bigger gribblies too; and how to make some of the weapons stand out (if this is neccasary...); i've considered trying to blend them to a darker brown maybe? Chitin on larger bugs will have to be more detailed.

I also picked up a pot each of coat d'arms Bogey Green and Vampire Red but the coverage on both is terrible! Ce la vie...
