Istvaan IV, Gothenburg Subsector.

Brother Sergeant Lucius peered over the ridge of the hill, the burnt out ruins of a watchtower dedicated to one of this planets founding settlers to his left and an abandoned Hydra Defence Platform to his right.  Ahead in the distance he could see the columns of advancing enemy armour, at least two company or Leman Russ and APC's.  Somewhere in the newly erected prefab town block to the west lay the rebel commanders quarters; Lucius could just about make out the movement of infantry in and around the buildings, though he knew that the terminator strike planned would make short work of the heretic scum, that would be the signal for the second company's drop pods and landing craft full of the Emperors finest to strike. The trap was set.
He motioned to the rest of his scout company to start loading into the Razorbacks and prepare to move out; they wouldn't be able to hold out for long against such a sheer amount of armour, besides...that wasn't the plan.
Far away on the eastern flank a small force of the Chapters Fifth company mounted on Typhoons were already engaged in an exchange of fire though all he could make out was the distinctive pattern of multilasers futilely out of range of the long range rockets of the landspeeders; a sentinel squadron maybe...
Lucius smiled a grim smile, the mission briefing hadn't mentioned to expect such heavy armour prescence, and in all his years of fighting he new this would be a hard fight.  By now the force sent to intercept his scouts diversionary attack - no doubt troubled by the prescence of two warhound titan's sent along to support his men -  would be in the drop zone; he looked to the sky before mounting his own vehicle; soon it would awash with the familiar azure trail of a Space Marine planetary assault...the day would be theirs.

Objectives, Armies, Deployment

The Istvaan IV 5th Eisentroppen Heavy Lancers, under command of General Von Strappon (AKA Steve Plenderlieth)

Crimson Fists Strike Force Divine Intervention, headed by Brother Captain Lucius of the Second Company (AKA Ryan Downes/'Man of Kent'

Ryan: The plan was simple; Barrage the hell out of the vicinity near my Blitz objective and let the drop pods do their dirty work, the scouts, landspeeders and titans would sweep up the the right hand flank and/or deal with any of Steve's army that escaped the initial bloodshed. Teleport the terminators in nice and early so as to keep the activation count up and win yet more early eassults; (after all i was nearly guaranteed to get first turn) and hope to god that Steve didn't bunch up too much!

Steve: [Insert Comments here]

TURN 1 to follow.

Go Fists! :agree:

Lovely looking armies. What are those large round things in Marine force picture? Did you bring your own objectives?

edit: ah, silly me, it's probably drop pods. Is the increased deathwind barrage area that comes with larger bases intentional?

TURN ONE

The air crackled with the familiar electric smell of warp teleportation and Brother Huranth stuggled to steel his stomach, as his vision cleared he squeezed the trigger of his assault cannon at the shapes he began to see around him and prepared to lay down a withering hail of fire as the rest of his squad advanced through the building to hunt down the traitor Von Strappon. "Cease Fire" came the furious voice of Chaplain Levicticus over his 'comm, "Emperors teeth it's the wrong building"; this was no rebel commanders outpost; it was barely finished 'fab-block, the hazy human shapes that Huranth had seen merely statues...the Chaplain was shouting into the orbital relay channel, damning the fools who had given them the wrong co-ordinates and suggesting the 2nd Company re-deploy it's drop zone...then the thuderous explosion of heavy shells blew Huranth off his feet and all went dark...

Teleports etc: Terminators Teleport inside building's near the Infantry Company: 3 Blast Markers!!!
Initiative: Imperial Guard (Ryan: "doh!")

With the initiative falling to the Guardsmen the first tank company fire a sustained barrage of battle cannon shells at the already dazed and confused Terminators; the building collapses in upon them and of the once proud warriors only five of them escape the building alive, bruised and broken they retreat to the pre-planned drop zone co-ordinates.

Upon the other flank a shadowsword advances and strips the shields from one of the warhounds that can be seen on the horizon over the wood.

Despite this early disaster the planetfall goes as planned as the orbital barrage from the strike cruiser makes meat of 3 of the tank companies Leman Russ's, the combined fire of the two drop pods destroys a stand of infantry, sentinels and roughriders whilst the light missile pods bounce harmlessly off of the Inperial Tanks. Well trained the INfantry Company hold thier overwatch and decide not to offload at any of the disembarking marines.
With the assault in place the chaplain with the assault marines jumps into the fray to engage the already battered tank company wiping them out completely as the support fire from his battle brothers easily cuts the tank company down; only 10 of the valiant marines fall.

In a desperate bid (that succeeds!) to trigger the Marine's scouts behind the hills overwatch the sentinels guarding the infantry company double forward scoring a blast marker though losing two of thier number and becoming broken themselves; they retreat to the command bunker objective as a well times attack from the rough riders comes screaming over the hill and in a close fought and long combat completely wipes out the scouts!
[we later realised we'd given the RR's twice as many attacks as they should have had; an additional First Strike extra attack instead of just First Strike as is standard :-(...ce la vie!]

The Warhounds intend to double over to take cover behind the buildings and to lay down a huge amount of fire into the infantry bunkered down inside...this isn't the case; they roll a 1 to activate; I use my SC re-reroll: result: 1!!! I get the feeling this isn't going to be a good day but i do remove all blast markers and get my shields back.

THe Hydra formation tactically retreats from the company of Space Marines that they've just seen wipe out a tank company and to make way for the Supreme Commanders formation to come rolling into the fray to engage the drop podding tactical marines; the result is 7:4 to the vastly superior numbers of the guardsmen and the marines have no supporting fire to speak of; they suffer three casualties and are broken.

THe Marines' Thunderbolts go onto CAP whilst the Typhhons singe toward the left hand flank firing at the second formation sentinels, destroying one whilst the second shadowsword doubles into position to score 1 DC on a warhound.

Next the infantry company quickpaces it through the city to fire at the devastators who are still in the open; despite needing 6's to hit they slay two stands of the marines who are one BM from being broken.

In an ENTIRELY foolish move the devastators double towards the imperial AFV mounted guardsmen ready to lend support fire for the Marine's SC's formation to assault; it's a risk but Ryan reckons that if his transports (yes, that's right, my rhino's, a razorback and a hunter...) can win a clipping assault then he can stem the tide of battle...needless to say they can't as Steve's rolls a silly amount of 5's and i lose ALL Of the formation; the devasators recieve a BM and are broken :-(...it's downhill from here...

Meanwhilst the unbriken sentinels use the Imperial re-reoll to fire at the typhoons ineffectively...however an entire second tank comany does better, singling forward and blowing four of the formation from the sky, they're broken needless to say.

THe Landing craft blows away a chimera with long range Lascannon fire whilst screaming overhead the guardsmen's thunderbolt fighters attempt to make the most of all of the broken formation on the table though the zone of fire created by the Landing Craft and my CAP fighters make easy work of both formations who don't take much more part in the battle what with 2-3 blast markers each and both losing an aircraft!

END PHASE
Broken: Rough Riders, Lone Sentinel, Tactical Marines, Terminators.
Rallied: Devastarots,Lone Landspeeder, Warhounds, Sentinels
Failed to Rally: Infantry, HQ, Assault Marines.

Nope...we measure them from the centre of each base so as to keep in line with how a regular SG issued drop pod marker would work; i think it would be taking the piss otherwise!

Looking forward to the rest of the report.

TURN TWO

The Lieutenant smiled to himself as he surveyed the field of battle; although he was still slightly worried about the prescence of titan's on the other side of the battlefield comm's chatter had made it clear that the remaining Armoured Company and salvaged Shadowswords that they'd picked up during the uprising would make short work of them. Before him lay scores of dead Space Marines and the wrecks of the burnt out shells of the 'Hammer' company's Leman Russ's, on this flank all that was left to mop up we're a few remaining squads of the so called 'Emperors Finest' and to keep watch of the skies for a possible seconds strike from the Landing Craft.  The man named Husk had paid him and his superiors handsomely for tTeleports etc:hier services, and from the horror stories that the Lieutenant had heard it was best to keep on the right side of him; the rigor mortis grin that seemed to always be present on the man's face spooked him out there was no denying that. After this was done the regiment was due to be shipped off world to Gothenburg for policing duties...something that promised to be an easier fight than this had been.  He closed the hatch of his Chimera and ordered the Regiment forward once more.

Teleports etc: None
Initiative: Marines

By now i was pretty certain that i was onto a loosing battle; if anything my assault with the Supreme Commanders formation had been a big mistake; they should have stayed put, sustained fire and rallied whilst setting up a defense around the landing craft...however WHAT IF'S NEVER WON WARS and so the best i could do was battle on into turn two taking some pretty big risks to see if i could stem the tide

]
Firstly the warhounds doubled towards the the infantry company as originally planned, although letting rip with everything they had the combination of -2 to hit for doubling and cover meant that only 2 stands of guardsmen fell to the searing bolts of plasma that the titans spat forth before the first of my big risks in this turn took place; an assault with the Landing Craft on the Chimera Driving Scum on the flank! Despite the presence of 3 Hydra's in the area the Dropship sailed through taking no damage and...coming into a DRAW with the guardsmen...we fight again and before i can let out an appropriate swearword the magazine's on the landing craft explode leaving me speecheless; a critical hit, 3 times in 3 battles!!! Just my luck.

The hydra's then attack the devasatrors killing a stand and breaking them whilst the imperial t.bolts fail to go on CAP and the Lone Assault Marine stand attempts to keep away the inevitable by tripling back to the Hydra Emplacement objective to contest it in following turns.

THe infantry company triple from the now cleared drop zone area capturing the blitzkrieg fuel dump and ammo dump objectives, threatening to completely overwhelm five devastators who find themselves surrounded!
My thunderbolts stall for time by blowing up a single sentinel with missile fire and breaking them, whilst on the other side of the battlefield a lone traitorous pilot breaks my remaining landspeeder for a second time...I have NO ACTIVATIONS LEFT and i leave steve to do his dirty work :-(...

...Which includes:
The remaining tank company shelling one of my warhounds to death

("INSERT AMUSING CAPTION HERE!")

THe Blue Company Shadowsword capturing the Desecrated Shrine
and a heap of innefective fire here and there...

END PHASE
Most marine units remain broken and all but the single typhoon and a lone stand of devastators rally.
All guard reduce/get rid of BM's etc :-(! Not my day at all!

TURN THREE

NOTEBy now both Steve and I knew this was a dead cert victory to him but we decided to play a very quick turn three so as you guys could get a proper battle report from us :-)

Inquisitor Loki looked through the pile of Dataslates on his desk for the third time that day. Usually a shadowy and mysterious figure who cared little for paperwork there was nevertheless something deeply disturbing about Husk.  The man had his fingers in too many proverbial pies, he controlled the police force, had seemingly limitless off world resources, several planetary governors on his side and - regardless of his previous high standing within the Inquisition - Loki knew that Husk was present on Gothenburg with his own twisted agenda...before the warp storms had engulfed the sub sector Loki remembered SOMETHING in the back of his mind, some back water shrine world that had turned to an unorthodox, supposedly Imperial, creed...it was no good, he'd go back to his library and begin research once more...

THe Turn in brief:
-Shadowsword 1 attempts to double and destroy the remaining warhound: it fail.
-Shadowsword 2 retains and blows away my last landspeeder
-The devastators with draw futily firing thier bolter at the advancing tanks (they are swiftly gunned down!)
-Infantry triple in order to make sure they hold both objective nearby.
-The Chimera;s attempt to get lucky at the Warhound; nothing.
-Sustained fire from the Hydra's kills a single stand of tacticals
-the Leman Russ stay put with no targets or even a reason to go anywhere else!

END PHASE

No rallies.
RESULT; 5-0 TO The Traitorous Guardsmen!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++999.M41 TimeSeg:1006c++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

An Excerpt from Inquisitor Loki's Journal

..."with time for much research after the events on Gothenburg - of which i have told before and have not time to go into again here - it is my duty to inform the Lord High Marshall that the uprising on Istavaan IV can only be attributed to one of our very own, more radical members, Lord Inquisitor Luthor Husk.
It is thought that through his influence throughout the sector, not to mention his psychic abilities, that he was able to set up a new cult like organisation on Istvaan in order to mask his activities elsewhere...whilst the planet tore itself apart in civil war after the disastrous landing by the Crimson Fists I can only state that Istvaan IV is a classic example of how heinous men like Husk operate; they believe that struggle makes Mankind stronger but i say we must unite...Istvaan IV wasted resources, men, tithes and machines and it is only now that we can begin to truly see the web that the Amalthanians spin..."

For the caption i was thinking something more along the lines of
"Frank, Frank, get up!"

And what do i need a sombrero for? To look more like a Crimson Fist? I don't get it!

You called your Warhound... Frank?.. Not very inspiring but well, hey. I think mine was funnier

I think, but may be mistaken that the sombrero comment is in connection to the old spaghetti westerns and your fashionable style, amigo. ...What?.. Clint Eastwood of course...

Unless of course it was the Magnificent Seven, then you'd look like one of the Bandito's.

Edit: Image replaced because the first wasn't a good likeness. Oh, ok... I chickened out!

The sombrero quip was a reference to the Spanish/Latino names of Crimson Fists :p
