Another game today! Just 5k which seemed like a trifling amount after recent battles...  

Used Handbook 2008 Ulthwe, and Tyranids 9.1 with sniper lictors and +2 to rally mods. Forces were:

Turn 1:

Bugs swarm forward in traditional fashion, hugging cover as much as possible. Blast markers spread around on either side. The Eldar Wraithship, Phoenix's, Scorpions, and Phantom manage to knock a Hierophant and the Hydraphant down to 3DC each. The Ulthwe Swords formation doubles behind the Dominatrix and shoots it with a rear crossfire, but only do a single DC damage and are then wiped out by a Carnifex brood in a firefight.

Guardian host rushes out of the gate looking for trouble, killing 4 gaunts with shooting. End of turn, no units remain broken,

Turn 2:

The Avatar shows up, and leads a charge into the heart of the gaunt swarm in front of him, breaking them and following the retreating bugs into the ruins.

The Cobras then sustain fire killing 5 Carnifexes and a hormagaunt in the ruins to the right in the picture below.

Knowing that my wounded hierophant won't survive another round of fire, I charge the phantom hoping to get lucky, with the other hierophant coming up to support.

The Phantom swats the hierophant dead and takes no damage in return...

The Eldar blast the remaining heirophant, and then I assault the Phantom again with gaunts. I lose 8 gaunts break and retreat, but inflict 2 damage to the Phantom.

Eldar aircraft and Nightspinners continue to strafe the Tyranid units, and the Phantom kills the remaining Hierophant. I sustain fire with a popping up Harridan, getting lucky and doing another 2 DC to the Phantom. The Phantom has finally had enough and retreats back to its blitz objective to recover.

Turn 3

The Eldar blast the Dominatrix swarm killing two trygons. The Dominatrix charges into the guardian host taking two formations worth of overwatch fire and loses 4DC and the combat, killing 5 eldar units in return. She retreats back to a take and hold objective. The Eldar continue to blast the generally shattered Tyranid units.

I see a slim chance to win by holding my own objectives and move my remaining units to hold them, while concentrating fire on the guardian host on my side of the table.

It works, the Eldar fail a series of activation tests and are unable to get another unit into my half of the table. The few Eldar guardians on my side of the table are elminated. Score 2-0 to the bugs, 'Defend the Flag' and 'They shall not Pass'...

The Ulthewe tactic of sitting back on overwatch was very effective, but they concentrated too much on killing bugs and forgot about the objectives...

Still not a very satisfying way to win with bugs... just managing to hold on in my own half of the table rather than over-running the Eldar positions...

That was an enjoyable read, quite exciting. So, Tyranid cunning won through. I thought they had you there. Thanks for posting.

Cool battle report. The Phantom took an awful lot of punishment. I guess if I ever play 'Nids I'll make sure to take a powerfist too!

And nice to see them "Engines of Kraytonian" used for Eldar. They really look the part.
