Another problem with just scanning/3d printing is the resolution of the 3d printer/Rapid Prototyping machine. Someone on these boards scanned a 40k scale Monolith and printed it out at 1/5 size, and it took a lot of cleanup work to smooth out the "pixels" from the printer!
too bad, because if the one my college has is available, I want to scan and print a few items, but there's no real reason to do so if the printer is that wonky!
