Long term board members will know that we roughly split up the year into three sections - GothiComp, EpiComp and BattleComp at four months each.

BattleComp is a more 'light hearted' event than the other two. No prizes, all done for fun and just to get involved. It started life as a 'Tale of Wargamers' series of posts, with each participant starting a new army, and then buying, painting and displaying a section each month to complete it after four months.

However, last year saw very little activity, with few starting forces, and none finishing. So, we have a choice...

1. We run the traditional 'Tale of Wargamers' and hope we get more people involved (I may even take part myself, and try to do better than my failed Epic Orks!).

2. Alternatively, I thought about an 'Aces of Eight' competition. Essentially, members take ONLY eight paints (black, white, brown, silver, red, blue, green and yellow - no inks, no skin tones!), one size 00 brush, some files/sandpaper and one primer/undercoat. They are restricted in only these tools. They take one photo of their equipment and a model before, and can use only these tools to paint the model, posting a picture after. I would be interested to see what is possible with a 'starter set' only.

3. We do something else!

So.... Comments, feedback, thrown rotten fruit?

If you do decide to do "Tale of Wargamers" again, I promise to participate. Having deadlines helps me get painting done.

While I love to read the Army Build threads when they work out, I would suggest that the Aces of Eights idea is something that might be real fun to try and might give folks enough of a change to gather new players into the contast as well.

Just my .02

Having offed the blasted postgrad, THIS time I should be in better shape - in fact it's the first year on Taccomms in which I don't have postgrad work - how nice :)
So tale or 8 aces thingy, anything is fine - except that (1) I'd replace silver with 'a metal of choice' and (2) aske whether mixing paints is allowed.

I did actually finish my army last year, I just stopped posting updates for it after a while.

I'd be happy to go around again, I have a Valhallan army itching to get built.

I already have three under construction, so this might be good motivation to get it done. I'm very interested in the limited paints and tools on a single model. that could be quite fun.

Aces of 8 sounds cool to me. I recently started a project painting a Vampire Count using just 4 pots, to be completed ina Sepia tone style to look like an old photo & its taught me a lot. I'd be interested in something similar again  :blues:

If you do the Tale of a Wargamer again I'll participate with my Pax Arcadians.  I don't intend to let them sit "au naturale" and this would be a good motivator for me.

The Aces of 8 idea came about as I was going away on holiday and thought about picking up one of the GW paint sets with eight paints and five Marines. Blending, mixing and diluting (to make ink substitutes) would all be allowed. Only conversions would be using household material, not other miniature material.

Of course, there is no reason that we couldnt run both the Aces of 8 (as a single thread, or two threads) and the Tale of Tactical Wargamers in parallel...

I'd go for just the one, CS, or we'd end up with one person doing one and another doing the other; this way we might scrape together two participants  :p
Don't know which I prefer - both sound fun.

So it seems the tale has won out in the end.

Start date - mid January, after Epicomp ends, or end January?

Can we add a special feature: one model should represent the gamer himself (or at least his own personal vehicle) - just for a laugh; we can then have a gamers' gallery to see how we view ourselves.  :vD

Actually, start date will be January 1st - since entries for EpiComp are closed, it wont interfere with painting schedules and it then gives us four months before GothiComp09.

I am about to put up a set of rules and guidelines...

Now, where did I put that Greater Daemon of Nurgle...?
