They just made an error, which I think by now will admit, setting a lot of stories at 999.m41. No more wiggly room for them.

The error was made back in the 80's when the year 2000 seemed so far away, and all the stories were set in 988.M41, then 989, then 991, then eventually 999... at which point the timeline had to stop moving so that the game didn't have to be renamed Warhammer 41,000...

Warhammer 40,000 is a setting, not an evolving story.

I mostly agree, but they do move the "storyline" forward from time to time, if for no other reason than just to introduce new lines of minis and marketing campaigns.

Their main direction over the last few years has been to move the timeline backwards in order to do new events / add new models.

Thus FW's Taros Campaign is set 50 years before 999, Imperial Armour 5 is actually set 1-200 years before Imperial Armour 4, last summer's big campaign (Medusa V) was intended as a 'historical' campaign, etc.

So they may add more depth to the setting, but they will never extend the current extent of the storyline.

I may well be mistaken then (Goes to look) ... my mistake, it's set in 997-998.

It isn't unconceivable they would make a radical change in the setting by killing off the Emperor.  All they have to do is make some new fluff up about traveling FTL, or have somebody else take the throne?? :oo: Willingly or unwillingly.  Have it turn the dark age of 40,000 even darker and it gives them a whole new opportunity to sell new mini's, new books, new rules, etc.

It may be just the thing the suits would propose in order to jump start new business too.

EDIT: How appropriate would Apocalypse be as a title at that point (meaning 'the unveiling')?
