Turn 1:
The battle began by the predators rumbling forwards to open fire upon a sentinel squadron skulking in among the buildings around the objective on the chaos left flank. The sentinels, however, overwatched and destroyed one of the chaos marine tanks, rendering the predators fire mostly ineffective.
The Imperial commander called in fire support on the large chaos marine retinue holding the chaos centre, placing four blast markers. Wary of further Imperial artillery strikes, the Black Legion warlord tasked his veteran marines to infiltrate forward and suppress the other battery ? their harassing missile launcher fire placed a blast marker.
Yet the massed Imperial firepower was prodigous, the Guard commander realising the necessity of blunting the Chaos armoured advance. Hence the Imperial Vulture gunships launched a missile strike on the Chaos Marine Landraider company, destroying two and breaking the remainder. Enraged, the Chaos warlord ordered his other folorn hope of veterans to launch an assault on the sentinels on the chaos left flank. The traitors wiped out the lightly-armoured walkers for no loss.
Imperial AA crews and the remaining sentinel squadron, menaced by the infiltrating chaos veterans, turned their long autocannons on the traitors and cut down two squads, as the Chaos Raptors jetted from the right flank to the left. One of the Feral titans lurched forward, hosing down the hydra squadron with heavy shells and blasting two of the AA tanks to bits, as the Imperial Guard HQ company redeployed to block any advance by the foot-bound chaos marine retinue deployed in the centre. The marines, slogging up to the top of the rocky outcrop, rained fire down on the guardsmen but only destroyed a pair of chimerae.
The Imperial commander called in armoured support, and the Leman Russ company engaged the chaos marines with their full firepower ? despite the rocky cover, twenty-five marines fell casualty to bolter or battlecannon and the traitors retreated back down the slopes. The chaos warlords retinue, in a bold stroke, marched into close proximity of the metal beasts.
The Imperial commander radioed the second manticore battery to call in another artillery strike, but still taking cover from the harrassment by the chaos scouts, they refused to respond in time to launch an effective strike this turn. Heedful to the heavy Imperial firepower in the form of a Shadowsword company, the second feral titan loped forward to attack the Leman Russ company, reducing one tank to slag with its Hellmouth. The Shadowsword company picked off three of the chaos predators and broke the traitor armour, which retreated into the woods on the chaos left flank.
The lone remaining hydra failed to rally, as did the chaos predators and the foot retinue
