Once again ES and I crossed swords in the name of fun with ES continuing to get a greater feel for Guard whilst I played a Supa-Zzap heavy ork force.

It should be noted that NealH suggested a force with a greater number of S-Zzaps in it but I could just not play with the list as it did not feel competitive and was too restrictive to my style of play.

Due to clever placement of objectives by ES it was difficult for the orks to garrison in cover and make use of the firepower the gunmobz possessed. However the revised rule of garrisoning 2 formations on Overwatch helped out here as the orks placed 2 gunmobz in the open, but with a cover save.

The guard countered with two infantry companies placed on overwatch with the Vultures garrisoned on one flank and Stormtroopers on the other behind the infantry.

Other forces spread out in their respective deployemnt zones, with the orks trying to station themselves  behind cover to prevent from being shot at by the shadowswords and vultures.

Forces were placed and the dice were ready to roll so off we started...

Strategy went to the Guard and surveying the field their commander was dismayed to see that there were no War Engines for his deathstrikes to target, however determined to show the strength of his army (and use them before they got shot at) the deathstrikes activated and fired on the ork's Big Blitz Brigade in the centre of the deployment zone. 2 shots, 2 hit, 2 dead wagons & 3BM.

Satisfied that the enemy now knew what was facing them and spotting that the left flank was not covered in any flak protection the Guard called in their Thunderbolt air support to target the skorchas stationed there. Screaming in the aircraft hit 5 out of 6 times wrecking 3 of the ork light vehicles and leaving them 1 BM away from breaking.

Not interested in that flank of the battle the ork general ordered the Blitz Brigade on the right flank to double forward and attack the Shadowsword advancing up the centre right of the field. 1 Titan killing supa-zzap gun got into range and then proceeded to miss (1BM).

Grumbling something about the worth of zzap guns the ork warlord turned his attention to the left flank and called in the support of smaller Fighta Bomba squadron (3 no). Swooping through the flak of the infantry company on that flank they let loose their rokkits at the Vultures hidding there, scoring 3 glorious hits only to see 2 of them fail to explode and only 1 vulture fall in flames.

Not concerned about the aircraft on left flank the Shadowsword that had previously been targetted activated and advanced towards the Gunmob garrisoned forward on the Right Flank. In a dreadful mixup of over confidence the super heavy tank commander advanced into range of the supa-zzap gun which proceeded to fire, hit cause 2 points of damage, one of which went critical destroying the tank.

Realising the potential threat of the five stand formations the Guard company on the left flank were ordered to fire on the nearest Gunmob. 9 shots resulted in 1 hit (would have been 4 if not for the benefit of cover) this was not saved resulting in 2 BMs being placed.

Seeing an opportunity open up infront of them the skorchas doubled forwards to fire on the infantry company on top of the left flank hill. Not quite sure why they were doing this and needing the reassurances of the Warlord that they were not being sacrificed (SC Re-roll required). The skorchas shot forward to within 15cm of the infantry company, shot once and placed a Blast Marker.

Making the big push up the left flank the Landa and loaded warband were sent hurtling down towards the infantry on the hill with the Vultures behind being close enough to be drawn into the conflict (intermingled). The flak continued to fly this time catching the Landa once which needed its reinforced armour to save it. In the ensuing combat the Guard lost 7 infantry stands and the Hydra whilst the orks lost 2 grots and 2 nobs with a further hit on the Landa --- which went critcal ---- ?:angry:

Final roll-off is won by 1 point by the orks breaking both the infantry and vultures and leaving the hill in ork hands.

The second (well only now, but you know what I mean) Shadowsword advanced more carefully on the left flank garrisonned gunmob, however again due to cover the big volcano cannon was not able to bear down on a target and missed.

With no immediate targets available to it the gunmob in the centre right position held their position and went down into Overwatch incase the warhound tried anything.

The warhound then responded by advancing on the forward blitz brigade firing all its weapons and killing two wagons, breaking the formation which then ran back to its starting position.

Losing patience with the gunmob on the right flank the infantry company on the hill go off overwatch and sustain at them. In a glorious show of poor dice rolling ES manages to roll 6 1s out of 15 dice but with the help of the hydra manages to score 4 hits killing 4. The final big gun ran for the cover of the nearest ruins in the centre.

With the ork right flank crumbling the Warlord was forced to call in the support of the remaining fighta bombas which screamed down through the flak again to target the unactivated Stormtroopers. All five AT shots missed but two AP shots caught the cowering troopers killing them.

The Regimental HQ then activates and sustaines at the orks on the left flank hill. Griffon fire rains down on the orks but only 2 are hit and 1 survives placing 2 more BM on the formation but they remain un-broken.

The Big Blitz Brigade now activate and double towards the warhound - 1 of the supa-zzaps misses and the other only manages to take down a shield.

Seeing a target the Storm Toopers double forward, but due to placement and Blast Markers only two Valkyrie can fire. A total of 10AT shots at 6+ or 7+ are fired, all of which miss only placing a single BM on the formation.

This just leaves Ork formations to activate.

The second Blitz Brigade (Left flank) doubles and shoots at the lone shadowsword and misses.

The left of centre gunmob doubles forward to get a line of fire on to the stormtroopers and kills a valkyrie (with unused missiles)

Seeing some sport, the Warlord and Big Warband double forward and fire AT at the Stormtroopers (20xAT7+, 1 hit 1 dead) no more barrage missiles  :)

The stormboys then doubled forward into a more central position.

Left flank Infantry company, Stormtroopers and Vultures (even with re-roll) failed to rally.

Blitz Brigade (Right Flank) & gunmob (Right flank) failed for the orks.

Turn 2

Strategy to Guard.

The warhound openned up at the big blitz brigade in front of it and failed to hit with its 4 shots (1BM). Retaining the Shadowsword advanced on the skorchas, failed its test and failed the re-roll. (this was not needed as the SSword was in range but ES forgot that at the time). The single shot was still enough to kill a skorcha and breaking the rest.

Bellowing for revenge the left flank Blitz brigade double to the SSword and the supa-zzap misses again, however a hit is scored by a big gun, but the SSword saves.

Enjoying their sport the Warlord and his Warband continue to fire on the stormtroopers. They fail to sustain, take the BM and firing AP hit 5 times destroying the remaining Valkyrie & breaking the infantry.

Seeing the stranded Warhound, the infantry company on the right flank doubled off the hill to give it support and poured fire into the Big Blitz Brigade scoring 1 hit out of 10 shots, the infantry destroy a supa-zzap wagon and break the formation.

Feeling abit exposed and with no real target the gunmob in the centre left position go onto overwatch .

Retaining, the Stormboyz engaged the stormtroopers :blush:  killing three trooper stands for the loss of one of their own and winning the combat by 7 in the roll-off wiping out the remaining stands.

Back onto the field of battle the Thunderbolts fly and target the gunmob that has gone on overwatch. This time they score 3 hits, killing two guns and breaking the rest.

The ork warband on top of the left flank hill attempt to Marshall, but fail and just remove Blast Markers instead.

The Reg HQ cautiously advanced towards the Blitz Brigade on the left flank scoring 6 hits which destroyed two wagons and broke the remaining 2.

Becoming restless in the ruins near the ork blitz, the gunmob that had previously been on overwatch broke cover and doubled forwardheading towards the infantry company. 1 Supa-Zzap shot later and the hydra attached to the formation was a smoking ruin. In glee abandonment the three fighta bombas dived out of the sky towards the Reg HQ and final Hydra. This time their aim is true and two hits are scored on the aircraft brining both of them down (should this have been at a -1 for having previously moved?) The remaining aircraft hit the hydra only for the inferno vehicle to save.

Looking to push out of their position, the deathstrikes then marched forward to their proposed re-supply depot (objective) only to lose 1 of their number to the difficult ground.

As the last activation of the turn the 5 fighta bombas ground attacked the broken vultures. Flak fire was still coming up from the Reg HQ hydra hitting 1 of the FBs and taking it down. 4 aircraft shot at the vultures and 1 scored a hit. The commissars vulture crashed to the ground and the second vehicle was lost due to Blast Markers.

IG rallied Reg HQ, Inf Comp (Left Flank) & SSword.
Orks rally Blitz Brigade (Left Flank), Big BlitzB, Stormboyz & Warlords Warband. (Skorchas failed)

Turn 3 and the orks finally win the strategy on a tie.

The big blitz brigade seizes the opportunity and doubles up to the warhound before it can fire its recharged plasma guns. The big guns miss, but the supa-zzaps both hit and cause 5 points of damage ripping through the shields and destroying the scout titan.

Feeling that they are finally getting the hang of this powerful weapon, the left flank Blitz Bridage doubled with the sound of the Warlord in their ears (SC Re-Roll required) and hit the SSword. However this time only 1 point of damage was caused and the super heavy tank lived on.

Being shot at reminded the SSword what it was there for on the table and it advances towards the blitz brigade destroying the zzapwagon and breaking the remaining wagon.

Seeing orks everywhere, the infantry on the right flank were ordered to sustain on the stormboyz lucking near the guard's blitz, after complaining about the orks infront of them (SC Re-Roll) they open fire with 15 shots hitting 8 times but the presence of ruins protects the boyz as only 1 stand falls.

Seeing a suitable target the ork gunmob doubled towards the lone Deathstrike and destoyed it with 1 shot.

The three remaining stands of the left flank infantry company advance to claim an objective and fire on the warband on the hill killing one stand of orks.

The four remaining fighta bombas attack the Reg HQ and loose another of their number to flak and only destroy a single chimera in return. Showing the ork flyboyz how to do it the Thunderbolts strafe the stormboyz, killing 1 and breaking the remainder who jump back towards the ork half.

The Warboss decides to show the stormboyz how to do it and marches towards to the Blitz claiming it for himself.

In an attempt to break the orks the Reg HQ then advances on the Warlord's Warband and 34 shots later 2 nobs, 6 boyz and 5 grotz are killed placing 9 BM but not breaking the formation.

Its mopping up time now for the orks as the centre left gunmob doubles forward and shoots on the left flank infantry company, killing 1 and breaking the other two. The Mob on the hill then also doubles and fires on the same company placing another BM.

The game ended there with an ork victory 3-0 (Blitz, Take & Hold & They shall not pass)

This was a really enjoyable game with slices of luck for both sides. The massed Supa-Zzap gun army did not suit my style of play and I felt that I had to be cautious with the Gunmobz as they were so slow, small and didn't have a save. Garrisoning on Overwatch certainly helps this formation.

Shot of the match had to be early on when the Shadowsword was taken out by the gunmob on overwatch. However I am sure on the Guard side the single guardsman who took out the Landa with a critical will be fondly remembered.

On top of the standard cost for a gunwagon or big gun I was playing that Oddboyz cost an additional 50pts.

For what is a very 'hit or miss' weapon, mainly hitting on a 4+ I feel that +50pts is suitable for the upgrade. and I hope the report shows that this can be a really random firing weapon. My main problem with Supa-Zzap and Soopaguns in gunmobz is that the big guns tend to end up as shields for the main guns and not used in their own right.

I would balance the army that I took by combining the gunmobz into two formations and probably taking soopaguns. These garrisoned up the table would give an opponent something to think about.
