Note that you still have to take spaceship (Hero) if you want to use Orcas!  :)

Umm, no. The Orca is an aircraft with Planetfall, same as the SM Thunderhawk. They can be used to Planetfall or as regular aircraft transports or as regular aircraft bombers.

My current feelings for the Drones are with two changes:

- Drone units (in any formation) may not capture or contest objectives

- drop the Drone save to '-'

I think that this would make them fragile, and the formation would disappear quickly in a firefight.

Comments?

They should have a reasonable price. 75 is too few, it allows popcorning in an extreme way which has to be eliminated in any case.

The first change is good, but the 75 point formation will probably still have to go. 100 points for a drone formation which can not contest/claim objectives sounds ok.

The second change (no save) is problematic. Currently, I've routinely been using drones to shield Crisis suits. With the 4.4.2 rules, however, the drones are almost a liability -- due to hackdown. This will get even worse if they have no save. I'll stop using drones to shield Crisis suits. Then I'll stop fielding Crisis suits altogether. I better get cracking on those Scorpionfish models...  :alien:

Independent drones are very different from drone upgrades. Someone posted an idea about separating independent (attack) and protective (defense) drones altogether. That might be the best way to go.

I have no issue with the first change but the 2nd one goes a little too far. Drones wouldn't get used at all under these suggestions, which as has already been mentioned, has effects on other (very important) units. Scorpionfishes are going to become very popular.

How about a 6+ save as a compromise?

Actually, we could just drop independent drones altogether and just make them unit upgrades with the disposable/grot rule put back in effect. This way Crisis suits etc. could feel more protected again. We could also keep the 75 points cost.

I think this may be a fairer result as there would be no popcorn and the drone rule has no complications as there wouldn't be an independent formation.

Just throwing some ideas out here, but what about if standard Drones were an upgrade only, and Heavy Drones were a support formation?

LOL! I was going to suggest that but I figured we still have the problem of drones having 2 rules. If they're just an upgrade "shields", we only need the one rule. Unless of course we just call the heavies "Combat" Drones with all standard rules - fluff could say they lose coherence with losses etc etc...

We could put a line in the special rules for Tau drones:

"units with the Tau Drone rule in their Data sheet..." etc etc.

Combat drones wouldn't get this rule.

We could also re-install the rule that drones don't count to resolution like grots again

I like this idea more than the first one (no save etc).
