I think that if you approach a tournament planning to change your formation set up every time you are going to suffer from not having a coherent way of fighting. For example setting up a big engagement for your heavy assault formation to then remember that the units have been split up across other formations. I approach a tournament with a battle plan that I try to impose on my opponent no matter what they are playing, not try to think of a plan as I go along.

We allow the nid player to build its swarms before deployment.
It has never been an issue as the list is designed with the swarm composition in mind.

For me the main question would be "Could someone design a list that really takes advantage of unsettled swarm composition?"

I can't really imagine that...

Well, for a tournament with prizes on the line, some unscrupulous player (What, that kind of person plays EPIC?!) might be able to think of something... *laugh*

thurse, does the Tyranid player in your group look at the enemy army and then decide what's going where or do they do it "blind"?

Having seen a version of Chroma's new formation structures, I have to say that it'd work better than the current system as far as pre-detirmining swarms goes.

Being the closest to a 'gamey' player there is on the UK tournament scene (Well I have been known to take Speed Freaks / Ferals / Tyranids to tournaments). I find it very hard to use the initial set up as a 'gamey' item.

For starters there are now restrictions on the overal size of the formations and with the BTS condition you don't want to expose your synapse creatures to a greater degree than you must.

I can see how a person might decide to garrison or not and that would change formation build up, but as I said before the player is then changing their battle plan not imposing their original on their opponent.

I believe the original intent was to allow Nids to decide swarm composition right before the game.  The original swarm-building rules included text to the effect of "before the game the Tyranid player must assign broods to a synapse creature" not "when creating the army list."

I have a hard time seeing that it will cause any major army composition modification.  As TT noted, if you don't have a game plan that includes swarm composition, at least in general terms, you've probably lost before the game starts.

We do it just before the reserve/garrison phase. So the nid player can look at the opponent army and adapt.
But actually, it doesn't change anything....
