So, the debate on the SG website about when Space Marine players decide what "type" of transport they're utilizing got me thinking, amongst other things, about when a Tyranid player decides what their Synapse Swarms will consist of.

Should it be fixed at the time of list creation?

Fixed at the start of a Tournament?

Changeable at the start of every game?

I may have missed some other options, but I'd be interested in seeing peoples' thoughts on this.

This one.

Given that nid swarm organisation can change even IN GAME from turn to turn, it doesn't make sense that it should be rigidly fixed at the start. This is all part of tyranid character.

The same is not true for marines and I think the arguments being put forth for their flexible deployment are not good ones.

Hmm interesting that Hena and I have been playing differently - there goes playtesting standardisation!  Not that our variable swarm composition we use in NZ tend to change much anyway, bar shuffling a few gaunts about. I mean what else do you do with 4 dactylis and a hive tyrant but stick em together? :)

Right, there is not too much variation between games, but still it is again new time consuming phase when nid player starts to think what formations he wants this time.

We have played with list that defines transports, formation upgrades etc to certain formations. And that has worked fine.

That is a different situation, but that would be ok to me if you want to have some spawning reserves.

I do know much about Nids but what would be one idea:
- tyranids choose a spawning pool beforehand, a bit like daemon pool for chaos
- the size of the spawning pool represents a bit of how much bio-mass is available etc. (so this a bit defines the phase of the assault)
- pool is used to spawn things into formations, a bit like daemons are summoned, but they stay until destroyed. This way the Nid can concentrate the spawning to vital locations and on-demand
- no other respawning or alterations

List creation time (I agree with Hena, thus; The debate is over). :)

I think that best would be at list creation time. Isn't it same as fixed at the start of tournament effectively?

The difference would be that "at list creation time" would be before you saw what your opposition at the Tournament is, while "start of Tournament" would mean you could tune your list to the known opponent armies, so it's a subtle difference, but one none-the-less.

Now, this is purely in regard to *Tournament Games*, as that's what the list is designed to do.  For playtesting, or "just-for-fun", etc, it's not that big of a deal, but I'd like to lock down the "when" for Tournament play.

As of now, Marines are the only other army that can "tune" before deployment, changing potential composition before each game. (Well, Eldar Spaceships can do that too, but that's a very small portion of the Eldar list.)

That's the whole big debate in the Adeptus Astartes thread!  *laugh*

The whole "When is a Rhino a Drop Pod?" quantum uncertainty question!  *laugh*

In the past two tournaments that I fielded Tyranids I produced a list that was split into Synapse, Common Broad, Uncommon Broad & Independent. I did not specifiy the formations. This was for two reasons, firstly to give me the flexibility to modify the formations I was using between the games and secondly because of the way the list is currently built up this was the easiest way for me to show it.

I should note that I did very little to change my formations between games, it was more a case of fine tuning the list for playablility more than anything else.

I had believed that that was the "default" way of doing it, but there seems to be some contention in that; whether it's allowed and, more importantly, whether it's fair.

The way the actual army list is put together currently, I think it implies the "mix-it-up" approach, but I'm not sure that's how it *should* be in a Tournament setting.  I'm looking forward to resolution, if possible!, of the Marine issue to guide us.

I do have an "alterate organization" army list that I'm working on that could remove this issue from the Bugs, but I'm waiting a bit to see what else is discussed.
