Most formations will have at least a couple of gargoyles allotted to them to act as AA cover. They don't die when used anymore, do they?

The Harridan and Trygons are going to act like my BTS and target anything tough or with a large number of units. IF I can get the engage off against the target formation they should rip through them.

I suppose the question is Do I drop a Hive Tyrant or some Warriors and lose an activation, but get some mycetic spores?

You are picking up on some of the reasons that I don't like using WE in a Tyranid List.

Done now, and while the wife is making dinner, a couple of comments:

I'd say ditch two of the Trygons to free up 200 points.  

Think of the Harridan swarm as what it's named, "Harassment Swarm"; with two Trygons it's a, relatively fast 7DC assault "war engine", for a mere 400 points... put in a couple of Gargoyles to soak MW hits, and you're good!

Since you're doing "mixed" swarms anyway, I'd suggest upgrading a Tyrant/Warrior Group  or two to Nexus Groups... better surviving Synapse and better re-spawning.

And that leaves you some points for Mycetics Spores (Love Drops!).

I can see the rational behind those changes. What if I drop 2 Trygons as you suggest and a Hive Tyrant. Upgrade to a Hydraphant, add in a formation of Genestealers to give me my activation back and add a couple of 'love drop' MS. I appreciate that my synapse are still vunerable but number of activations is a major factor in UK tournament games.

I can understand how that might be the case, but you've got to be able to protect/conserve your Synapse to maintain activations!

The "lone Tyrant" group has become a poorer choice around here, as focusing on such swarms allows the opponent to fairly rapidly deplete your activations.

I hope you can get in a trial game or two before the tourney, and best of luck from the Hive Mind!
