@PG

I'm with you, that is ridiculous.  Considering you removed the GW IP they can't put copyright on game mechanics or claim infringement when other games use the same mechanics already.

PG, thanks for the candid response; we can all benefit from the information relating to this project.

Its still their text.

I don't disagree that they would have a claim against me for redistributing their copyright protected content.

I just don't know where it is in their best interests to do so.

And given that they have no resources/interest in doing this sort of thing I can't see why they'd stop someone who is actually only interested in helping promote their games.

My thoughts exactly.

Without wanting to cast stones, I do wonder how almost exactly this has already happened.

Warmaster Ancients
Blitzkrieg Commander
Coldwar Commander

All of these games use the Warmaster core mechanics, and are totally honest about doing so.

So, why is this OK and even sanctioned (you can almost talk about Warmaster Ancients on the SG board) for one game and shut down for another?

1) All the parties in question got the approval of GW in advance
2) They rewrote the rules or used heavily edited versions
3) GW can't sue for using a game mechanic

This case is indeed different and I want to be clear that they would have a case... its just not a case that benefits them

While it would be more time consuming to do so, why not re-write the rules using different verbage enough to escape a legal smell-test?  Refer to different aspects of the game mechanics by different names (Ranged Assault instead of Fire Fight), combine and split up different paragraphs, use a different numbering scheme, re-order the different rules sections, merge the Special Abilities rules in among the pertinent normal rules, etc.

WMA is produced by Warhammer historical and maintained by a certain Mr R Priestly (he even posts to the yahoo community that supports it, fancy that!)

Oh and there is a potentially a Sci Fi version of BKC/CWC on the cards.

If GW won't support Epic and the fans aren't allowed I may have to look for a new ruleset for my 6mm sci fi armies :(

That is now the ultimate goal.

Hi!

While a re-write with total "verbage" altering and such is a huge task, its a necessary one. Thats what we did with netepic. We've been "reviewed" a lot of times over the years and ave withstood the "smell test".

Good luck with all this. I believe you are doing the right thing. GW has proven they will not support you and may even hinder you, but your taking the correct steps to develop a good game.

Gods a Sci-Fi version of warmaster would kill Epic! Enough groups seem to like using the same mechanic for different periods, so why have Epic and Warmaster at your club? :(

It's not a potential, it is fact.

And the army lists will feature EW, DRM and others.

Finally we can do match ups like Andrayada vs Khazari and vice versa.

Will be interesting to see who has the superior droids :D. Probably the Andrayada... but hopefully the Khazari Plasma rifles will even the odds somewhat ;).

BKC/CWC, The Sci-Fi version is going ahead but it is interesting to note that GW have had their name struck off the list.
