Question - how do you affix the side fins on epic Eldar SHTs like the scorpion?

I always pin models (even if they don't need it - I like them to be robust) but the fins are too thin to get a 1mm drill bit in. Also, it isn't really obvious how/where they attach to the main body.

I might get away with gluing but these are going to fall off - they are in such a prominant position at the side that they will fall off anyway if the tanks are ever stored.

I'm a moderately skilled modeller but this is stumping me...and no way do I want to put up with leaving them off altogether!

All help appreciated, ladies and gents...

Just looked at mine, still unbuilt ... of course if you look at pics of them you can see where they go. But you are correct, they stick out and only a small area glues to the hull.  You could use a little piece of plastic and maybe green stuff to make a more robust anchor point and it would only change the general appearance a little ... :)

You could do what I do... Keep re-gluing them.

Seriously, I have glued those fins on a bunch of times and if they bump against something they op right off again.  I would suggest just being verrrry gentle (they only have 5+RA after all).

Actually, that's precisely what I did!  Left them off completely!

Painted up, they still look dandy!  *laugh*

Looking at the ones in the Swordwind book, its possible I need to trim the tabs off further than they appear they should go...at least that would give a bit more contact with the main body, but I doubt enough room for pinning reinforcement.

Having to re-glue would be a pain, also it would probably knacker the paint job.

Support with pinning from underneath?  It shouldn't be visible from above but I would know it was there!

I filed mine down on the surface where they attach to the main peice at an angle past 45degrees so that they stuck up and out seemed to work well

That's a good idea, E/S, I may have to try something like that. I just don't understand, why in most cases, G/W-S/G-F/W Epic models, which will be used for gaming, that they don't always make them "gaming-friendy" ? ???

Well I think I managed to solve it. ?Trim off 2-3mm off the end of the tab, leaves enough space to put a pin between the body of the tank and the bulk of the fin. ?An extra pin goes in the fin a few mm further back, and joins the tank in the engine nacelle. ?This last one is slightly visible but a small price to pay for securing the fin. ?I only completed 1 model (a storm serpent) but I have 4 more SHTs to go. ?They look good and feel quite strong - certainly enough to go in foam trays with the rest of the minis.

The only issue with this is that you can't make a mistake - if the hole you drill is wrong then you don't have enough material left to put another in.

The puzzle with this is why they aren't modelled on - the fins are in the plane of the tank so with some minor tweaking of the design I expect they would fit well.

Small price to pay though as the minis are excellent!

That sounds like a good "Fix" ... Like I said, sometimes G/W and F/W does not make model "Gaming- Friendly" !?  Like the SM2 Eldar Scout Titan with one leg in the air and the legs and waist are all separate pieces !??!  I posted pics here a little ways back. I drilled a hole in the bottom of his raised foot. And drilled a hole in a piece of RR Talus (light synthetic volcanic rocks) and glue a plastic rod/peg in between. Flat with the rock so it looked like he had one foot on a big rock. And I scattered a few other pieces of Talus on the base for continuity ...  Looks fine, but would have been easier and stronger if the legs and waist were molded in one piece.  But you have got me thinking and I'll see what I have to do for my SIB Eldar SHTs ! :;):
