Does anyone know where I can get various Roman (or Greek) equipment in 28mm? I would (in the far, far future) like to put together a Roman-style skeleton horde (the Egyptian theme has been done to death  ??? ) and I like the sound of skeleton phalanx, undead Cataphracts and chariots. The GW skeletons are really nice, and generic enough to use as a basis, but I would like spears, shields, helmets and other pieces of armour to add.

(Also, any other skeleton themes that people find interesting? I am thining towards the background to my own rules.)

Zvezda had a Roman-undead army in 28mm - will try to find links laser - er - later (sorry, this is laser maintenance week, which means all sorts of heck).

See, I knew that you guys would have the answer!

It seems that undead Romans is not quite as original as I first thought! ?:p ?Although, if this is only source out there, then at least it is fairly new, particularly since it seems that the 'Cursed Legion' is discontinued. I found two stores with this set:

And at only twelve pounds fifty for 24 minis, that is a pretty good price. Does anyone knw how good the sculpt are?

This seems to have the basics - shields and some spears. Some of the armour would be good, but I dont think that I will find that without a body inside.

Interesting. I just checked from a Finnish model commpany and in their web pages it is listed as "available again".

It would be interesting to get a copy of the rules. And I bet none of the regulars is surprised by that statement.  :devil:

I remember reading a review somewhere. I can't unfortunately say where but IIRC it said they are good sculpt but a pain to assemble as the parts have to be glued at joints. Of course, this means you have effectively an unlimited range of poses.

As I mentioned some time ago, I am keen to do something similar: weird VSF style figs.  Like the Wierd WW2, but instead they will be Zombie Zulus, Vampiric Pathan assassins, Russian wereCossacks, that kind of thing.

I know, I need help....

Probably about as surprised as they are by me posting a thread about 28mm skeletons only a day after my 6mm Greeks arrived!  :blush:

Some sites imply that the miniatures are discontinued, others dont. I would guess that they were dead... but got better.

Anyway, I caved. I convinved myself that I didnt really need any more miniatures, especially not 28mm Fantasy ones... and then made the order anyway. It is hard to argue with 24 miniatures for 14.50 UK pounds including shipping. I will post a review and pictures when they arrive.

Cursed Legion arrived this morning. Not bad - less that a week from payment to door. Of course, now they are here, I have found all sorts of reviews! There are two threads on TMP. In addition, the Cursed Legion are reviewed here, and the rules have a review here. (Still looking for your comments though, MP.)

First impressions are good. The skeletons arrive in a large box, which reminds me of the old Lego boxes, and the sprues could probably be made smaller. You do get standard bases, and some nice sabbat bases (which is a good bonus). The minis seem small, but this is most likely because they are true 28mm and in proportion, but there is a lot of nice equipment and such. While they come in a lot of pieces, and customisation should be interesting, it feels like the unit will look quite static, since changing pose is more difficult.

Anyway, pictures and a better review to follow shortly.

After getting the box back home, I have a bit more time for a proper review.

The box is larger than I thought, being A4 sized. Inside, you get:
- 5 sprues (details below)
- 24 single bases
- 2 movement trays
- assembly instructions
- shield transfers (17)
- stat sheet for the models
- unit card (for play, detailing effects for morale, etc)

Generally, pretty good value for 12.50 UK pounds.

The movement trays are nice, holding 12 models each, they also have tags so that the trays can be linked together.

There are five sprues in the box, of two different types.

The standard sprue (of which you get four), contains enough pieces to construct 5 undead legionaries. Included on each are...

- 5 sets of feet
- 5 legs/'skirts'
- 5 bodies
- 5 heads (with helmets)

Fairly standard so far, but you also get...

- 3 rectangular shields
- 1 oval shield

Arms can be constructed in two ways - either using the shoulder/arm with a hand/weapon attached, or using a shoulder and attaching an arm/hand/weapon.

Each sprue contains...

- 7 spears (4 with hands, 3 with hands/arms)
- 6 gladius swords (3 with hands, 3 with hands/arms)
- 1 bow (hand only)

Also included are helmet plumes, swords in scabbards and an arrow.

The command sprue (one included) contains enough parts for a further four legionaries - feet, legs, bodies and heads. In addition, there is a Roman style standard, musician parts (curled horn).

Generally, the mix included is a little puzzling. There are enough pieces to make only four archers, and only enough rectanular shields to equipe half of the unit with them. There are, however, enough parts to give all troops a sword or a spear (different from GW skeletons where you have to mix your hand weapons in a unit).

While customisation is very easy and interesting, posability is restricted. By including the legs already attached to the 'skirts' (despite having the feet seperately...  ??? ) there is not much that you can do about the pose. Also, compared to GW skeletons, these guys are more 'upright' in stance.

They do seem small, but the other review (linked above) deals with this quite well. Practically, I think that I will be forced to constuct the unit as two sections, one with swords and rectangular shields, and one with spears (although I will need some additional round shields for this group).

Generally, I am quite impressed with the set. More posability would have been nice (but difficult with the 'skirts' molded. Next, I think that I will have to see how well the various parts will mix with GW skeletons.

The molding, casting and sculpting quality is actually excellent - at least as good as GW - and there is practically zero flash on the models. Detail is really good and crisp, so that you can make out teeth, fur, etc. My only concern is about the accuracy of the minis. It seems that the bones dont match my (limited) knowledge. It is difficult to describe, and I guess that the real problem is that these guys are actually a lot more correct than the GW skeletons that I am used to!  :blush:

Wow !  I kind'a like them !  I see that they make Undead Legion Returns, Artillery and Cav Too !!!!  My undead ancectors !  :ghostface:  I wonder if Titus Pollo and Lucius Vorenus of the 13th are there !  I'd like to see them when they are painted up, C/S !  Interesting that the a Russian Co. did them and not G/W ! :D     Or Not !  :laugh:
