Eldar MMS v1.5

Available here: Eldar MMS v1.5

General note.
In 2006 the world saw the release of the Eldar MMS rules as envisaged by Sigoroth. I volunteered to make it a complete house rule set. In February the rules where first released through the online BFG magazine Warp Rift (issue 10), shortly followed by a separate PDF file in the Battlefleet Gothic characteristic landscape format.
Discussions where being held at mainly the Specialist Games forum. Some people liked it, some didn?t. The main objections that occurred where that the rule set was too complex and overpowered the Eldar defensively seen.

It did achieve, and I call that a grand success, that some people with their gaming groups gained interest in the Eldar again and accepted them as a force again in this splendid game.

Later in 2006 the online available Eldar MMS got updated to version 1.2 with very minor changes and corrections.

Now in 2007 there has been a  new wave of discussions. Ideas being thrown back and forth by a couple of engaged people who want to fix the Eldar.
One of the main addressed issues was the complexity of some rules in version 1.2. On top of that my main opponent never felt comfortable with the ruleset as well. And since I really like to play with my Eldar vessels in a good environment I took on the task of updating version 1.2 to version 1.5.

Goals.
With version 1.5 I had the difficult task of turning the complex Eldar MMS version 1.2 into a more K.I.S.S. version as it is popular called.
To do this I went through all remarks and ideas offered by the gentle BFG interested internet folks around. Even if these ideas where nothing like I had in mind or wanted.
Now in the end I feel like I have created which still has some deep good roots in version 1.2 but also incorporated the things that the masses asked or wished for.
But it also showed me that is almost impossible to please everyone 100%. It is all about compromising and I hope people will understand that.

Final note.
All the changes I made have not been approved, authorised, acknowledged, disapproved or whatsoever by the one who had the concept & idea for Eldar MMS: Sigoroth.
I hope he can still appreciate in some way what I have done to his vision on how Eldar should be in Battlefleet Gothic.
It was just a necessary for myself to play against my opponent with a ruleset he could approve of. And the fact that his view was shared by more people made it necessary for me to put Eldar MMS version 1.5 online.

And I hope people will give useful feedback and playtesting results as always. You are invited to do so.

The Changes from version 1.2 to version 1.5

? Movement
Lock-On: changed from one turn to no turns.

? Celestial Phenomena
Being in contact with blast markers added.

? Incapacitated
Rule removed.

? Dying Race
Because of the removal of incapacitated this rule got entirely reworked to reflect Eldar losses as a Dying Race.

? Advanced shielding
Rule removed. Eldar now have standard shields (think abstract!)

? Massed shielding
Rule removed.

? Holofields
Big rework. Greatly influenced by extensive experiences from Grimgork and Kurnous. It looks a bit like holofields under the official MSM rules but a tad different for better balance.

? Turrets
Changed from +1 to hit into re-roll failed turret fire.

? Weaponry
Gunnery weapons changed from ?count everything as closing? to the tactical more challenging: ?Eldar batteries gain a column shift left on the Gunnery table. Popular option as well.

? Ship statistics
o Hit points on capital ships lowered with 2. Back to original values thus.
o Escorts 4+ armour except Hellebore, this one plus all capital ships 5+ armour.
o Standard shields applied
o Point costs raised in a couple of places (Supernova, Shadow, Aconite, Hemlock, Nightshade & Shadowhunter).

? Overall PDF layout/design
o New cover
o Introduction page used to thank various people
o Rules actually fit on two instead of three pages now
o New pictures add through out document
o Text boxes corrected or removed
o Text reworked on ship pages

Eldar MMS extra notes:

? Shields & Holofields
Very very much different views on these relating mechanics. I chose for a KISS approach which still reflected something of v1.2 and of the MSM system.
Some people do not accept shields on an Eldar ship. I do in an abstract way and I hope other people will do and try these rules as well even if they do not like shields on Eldar vessels.

Extra note regarding the number of shields on the Corsair Light Cruisers Aurora & Solaris. For now I gave them one after comparing them to the IN Dauntless light cruiser. The Eldar holofields give them a protective edge, plus on average a better Leadership gives them more chance to BFI. This weighs up against lesser hits and more chance on critical hit.s
I would like to hear play test feedback on them.

? Movement
I am very fond of letting speed depend on the sunward edge and the use of Solar Sails. Especially if one makes use of the perpendicular line to determine the sunward arc.
Yet some people would rather see a movement style akin to Dark Eldar and others want to retain MSM as a principle.

? Dying Race
A special table with victory conditions. Always an issue to some. I hope I nailed the Eldar as a Dying Race quite well.
