It's been slow going, but we got in another Red Queen Rising game this evening, trying the "Breakthrough" mission.

Imperial Guard were under threat of being cut off and overwhelmed by surrounding Tyranid forces.  A very interesting fight and the first time we'd tried this scenario.

Battle 5 - Envelopment

Scenario:

Breakthrough (variant) - 2700 points.

Defender deployment zone: 25cm wide

Attacker deployment zones: 10cm wide

Broken formations that leave the table count as half value.

Rules Used:

All experimental rules.
Tyranids 7.1

Special Rules:

"Favour of the Queen" - one Synapse group, and associated Brood creatures, gains invulnerable saves.

Local Commander - add Supreme Commander to one Imperial Commander unit +50 points

Restrictions

No Imperial units with more than 30cm move.
No Synapse Nodes.
No Tyranid war engines.
1d6 Commissars

Setup

4'x'4 table.

Deployment

The Imperial defenders were deployed as shown, with all Infantry units in contact with their transports and the Tank Company fully on the road.

Tyranids kept both Lictor Swarms in reserve for teleport.

Turn 1

Both Lictor swarms show up, one in the Tank Factory and the other inside the Cathedral!  Both groups of Lictors have many enemy formations in their large Zones of Control.





Strategy Roll: Tyranids

Hoping to slow down their prey, Attack Group 1 sustains fire on Mech Infantry Company 1 and the Tank Company.  The Leman Russ only suffer a Blast marker while the other formation loses 1 Chimera and 2 Guardsmen.

Attack Group 3 advances to fire on Mech Infantry Co 2, and destroys 1 Chimera.

The Tank Company advances away from the Lictors, then swing their turrets around and blow away 2 of them!

The Marauder Bombers zig-zag over the battlefield, deftly avoiding enemy flak, to blast away 2 Genestealers, but failing to open a hole in their line.

Feeling threatened, the Genestealers leap forward to engage the Leman Russ Company, with the support of Attack Group 3.  The 'Stealers die like flies!  Despite a flurry of attacks (10 hits!) not a single Imperial tank is breached (All saved!) and the Guard win by "1", pushing the Bugs back, leaving 3 crushed Genestealer broods behind.


Lictor Swarm 2 pounces on Infantry Company 2 and scores an incredible *two* hits, killing 2 Guardsmen.  

The Guardsmen kill two of the Lictors in return and it's a straight roll-off? with the 'Nids winning by "2", killing 2 more Guardsmen and the surviving Imperials make a lateral retreat.


Mech Infantry Company 1 requests reconfirmation of their orders, and then proceeds to mount up and march off the battlefield through the gap left by the Genestealers!

The Super-Heavy Company doubles around the corner and blasts Attack Group 3? the Volcano Cannon strikes the Carnifex? which shrugs it off due to the Favour of the Queen!  WOOHOO!  No other damage is inflicted.

Attack Group 2 tries to double forward, but gets all confused and only moves forward.

The Mech Infantry HQ doubles forward and clears the remaining Lictor out of the Tank Factory.

Assault Group 1 tries to march on the fleeing prey-creatures, but also gets confused and only performs a single move.

Assault Group 2 shows them how it's done be performing a long range engage against the intermingled Super-Heavies and the Tank Company.  Despite scoring ten hits, the 'Nids crack open a single Leman Russ? the Imperial retort sees 4 Raveners, 3 Gargoyles, 2 Termagants, and 1 Hormagaunt slain, and easy victory for the Imperials!


End of Turn: Mech Infantry Company 2 fails to rally and uses its withdrawal moves to leave the battlefield.  All other Imperial formation rally.

Assault Group 2 respawns 1 Ravener and 2 Gargoyles with the use of a Mycetic Spore, while Attack Group 3 generates 3 Raveners with a Mycetic Spore.

Turn 2

No teleports.  Assault Swarm 2 takes the Raveners spawned by Attack Group 3 under their control.

Strategy Roll: Tyranids

Assault Swarm 2 engages the intermingled Tank Company and Super-Heavies? the 'Nids do a single DC of damage to one of the Baneblades.  The Imperials blow away 2 Raveners and 1 Gargoyle? and the Bugs some how manage to win by "1", doing another DC to the same Baneblade and breaking both Imperial formations!


Attack Group 3 sustains fire on the Super-Heavy Company and manages to do 2DC damage to the Shadowsword via Blast markers.

The Marauders ground attack against the Genestealers is a disaster this time as Attack Group 3 shoots one of the bombers out of the air while the survivor does no damage to the 'Stealers.

Realizing things are getting ugly fast, the Mech HQ marches out of the danger zone and off the battlefield.

With no enemies in range, Attack Group 1 marches forward.

Attack Group 2 and Assault Group 1 do the same, rapidly covering ground.

The few remaining Genestealers leap onto the broken Super-Heavies.  They do 1DC damage to the undamaged Baneblade, suffer 1 casualty in return? and the Super-Heavies win by "1", crushing another Genestealer into the ground.


Feasting on dead Guardsmen the last Lictor of Swarm 2 fails to march and just shuffles around?

End of Turn: Inspired by the victory against the Genestealers, both remaining on-board Imperial formations rally! (My opponent was almost hoping they'd fail just to get them off the board!  *laugh*)

The Spawning Pool is emptied as the few Brood creatures within it are respawned by various Swarms.

The Tank Company advances off the battlefield towards safety.

Waving their middle fingers at the Tyranids, the battered Super-Heavy company makes it off the battlefield on an advance.

The Tyrand of Attack Swarm 3 howls in frustration and goes on overwatch.

Realizing they've done their job, the Marauder Bombers stand down and then go for a coffee?

End of Turn: ?Imperial Score 4/6 - Narrow Victory

Living an hour away from all that carnage sucks. I really must make the effort to get to town. I want to be the one to kill that Red Queen dead!
