After the battle for the Ultramarine homeworld it was necessary to undertake a massive drive of recruitment across the Ultima segment to rebuild the chapters fighting strength.

As part of the rebuilding program it was necessary to run training scenarios for all the new recruits and for the older marines to become familiar with their equipment.  Many of the veterans had been killed so a new generation of Terminators was trained in the use of the heavy armour.

The first major war game of the training regime is detailed below.

Apologies for the delay, been hard at it over last couple days.

Table -

6 x 4 table width ways, green play area. ?20CM deployment line so ended up quite close to begin with.

Terrain Layout -

Left to right.

Ork Settlement and forest, this was the imperial cities monument to another battle. ?Made out to look like park land and memorial.

Imperial City, lots of buildings around 15 or so.

Hill and ridge lines with one large Imperial building on largest middle hill.

Objectives, 4 in the imperial city four on each of the corners.

So the board was basically symetrical.

Deployment -

Kev deploys his reaver at the right hand end, his warhound in the middle towards the right. ?Whirlwinds on large hill on right. ?Terminators supported by land raiders on the right as well. ?Battle co dev's and tacticals through the centre with land raiders vindicators and HQ as well. ?On left assault marines with vindicators plus a land raider detachment and Hunters

I deployed tacticals on left with land raider HQ. In middle three lots of land raiders devs assault and chaplin plus HQ. ?Left hunters, whirlwinds, dreadnoughts. ?In centre right warhound.

Very evenly matched armies as the core was exactly the same. ?

We used DS's alternate critical hit location tables. ?Otherwise standard NetEpic rules.

Turn 1 -

From my point of view the movement phase was all about getting things into position for the second turn.   Everything advances or charges into the buildings in the centre whilst the two flanks hold put.  The Land speeders charge down the right flank and find themselves catching the terminators off guard and in their land raiders still.

Kev also advances his forces into the centre of the battlefield but throws his left flank forward to assault mine in later turns.  I realise I'm heavily outnumbered on the left.

The first fire phase started badly for me as kev used his whirlwinds to blow up two dreadnoughts on the first shot of the game, indirectly landing the barrage on them as well!  That left them broken so one shot, one VP for kev.

I used my Whirlwinds to try and bring down the building that his devastators had set up in, it overlooked all four of the city objectives so was a key location.   This scattered (one of many in this game!)  The tacticals on the left shot down two stands of assault marines but pretty much everything else didn't do much!

The close combat phase was slightly better for me as I ripped a land raider apart and killed the terminators within as well with the land speeders.  That broke the terminators giving me some VP's.

Advance fire accounted for a couple of land raiders from each side, the turn ended with both sides having 4 objectives each.

Turn 2 -

The second turn looked like it could be decisive, a lot of shooting and close combat was going to occur within this round as we'd closed the gap between the two forces in the previous turn.

I won the initiative and asked Kev to move first.  He obliged by moving his warhound forward into the centre of the four objective holding buildings.  This mean I was faced with a dilema, do I let all the objectives been contested or do I try to kill the Titan.  I through caution to the wind and attacked on mass with Assault troops and the Chaplin.  Three Rhinos and Three Assault troops managed to come into contact with the Warhound after it's first fire and some snap fire.  I was confident that this would be enough to bring the Titan down (6th combatant should have 7 D6!)  Plus the Chaplin was just behind giving a bonus as well.

My Land speeders on the right moved to attack Kev's Whirlwinds, whilst on my left his assault marines charged over to attack my tactical marines.  His Rhino's from the assault troops attacked my land raider company HQ on the left as well!

On the right the reaver continued it's advance down the flank coming into line of site on the Hunters and Whirlwinds guarding my corner hill objective.

The land raiders company's on both sides advanced towards the centre.

The First fire phase was extremely vicious by the end of the turn the battle company on Kev's side had been broken and the land raider company was close.  Both of my company's had also taken massive damage and were tettering on the edge of breaking.

The higlight however was my whirlwinds.  I fired indirectly once more at the devastators but it scattered, this time a full 11cm which put the template over the CC between the assault marines and the warhound.  The warhound was obviously untouched but two stands of assault marines died by friendly fire...  :(   This prompted much laughter from Kev..

The close combat phase consisted of three actions, the first was the whirlwinds versus the land speeders, the whirlwinds put up a brave fight downing one unit (breaking it as well) before the other two died.

The left flank collapsed as although the tacticals were in a building the assault marines still rolled higher consistently leaving only 2 stands and three rhino's left. For no lose on the assault marine side as well.

The Warhound started by using it's point defence killing the three rhinos around the titan leaving just one assault marine, which it promptly stomped on. Gah so much for the master plan.   :(

Advance fire meant that I managed to kill some vindicators and claim some VP's for that but we both lost alot of VP's in the end phase for loosing objectives as they were contested.

Turn 3 -

Well the end was in sight (or so we thought) kev won the initiative and made me go first.  I charged his reaver, but it then walked away into my half of the table continuing it's advance towards my right flank which was caving in under the pressure from the Titan.

In the centre kev got around to moving his tacticals into the buildings to support his devastators.  I managed to charge these with my terminators and crushed them utterly over this turn and the next.  His warhound advanced into my half as well turning to face my warhound.

First fire saw the breaking of both land raider company's plus my battle co.  This was getting silly as we were managing to counter each thrust but only at the cost of lots of marines!

CC saw my left flank completely disappear whilst on the right I removed the last whirlwind.

I managed to hit his warhound with lots of fire this turn but couldn't damage it significantly with the new damage tables.

At the end of the turn we were at 35vp's each with lots of contested objectives being the difference between victory and defeat for both sides.

Turn 4,5,6

I've amalgamated these turns as there so little left to do anything it was just a case of trying to keep objectives contested and avoiding taking losses on those forces which hadn't been damaged.

Kev held the left completely.  His vindicators, hunters and remains of his assault marines (1 stand plus 2 rhinos) held the two objectives on this side (one in each deployment area)  I had no way of contesting these at all.

On the right I had Kev's deployment objective and he had no way of getting it back.  However I was going to loose my objective to his reaver as he advanced it over the turns to sit right on top of it.. In the process of this it also killed off the last two dreadnoughts, two land raiders, three hunters and a whirlwind.  The whirlwinds managed to stay around until the end contesting the objective.  If he'd charged them on the last turn instead of firing he'd have won.

In the middle the warhounds engaged in hand to hand I had a slight advantage as the chaplin was still around.  This meant i won two rounds of CC but couldn't damage it enough to destroy it.

In the objective buildings I had the terminators contesting all of them along with the HQ from the battle co.

The devastors from my side sat in a lovely high building with nothing to shoot at for two turns as the fight had already gone past them... Poor positioning on my part that.

well after alot of maths we worked it out that kev was on 39vp's whilst I only managed 30vp's.

I had a Chaplin, warhound and 2 whirlwinds left unbroken whilst kev had a warhound, hunters and reaver.

I think Kev forgot to pay for weapons for Titan's hence he was over the point value.  Those extra points did make a difference on the amount of VP's I could realistically claim as it was nigh on impossible to kill Titan's using the new damage tables with this level of points.

If kev had killed the chaplin or one more whirlwind it would have been a victory for him.

Apologies for spelling etc on this one I'm in a bit of a rush!
