ragnarok I love your Malanthrope, mind if I steal that conversion and make a few of my own for testing these stats?

AV could indeed be justified over LV.

I used to find it quite effective. Now it only delays the destruction of the army...

See, that's exactly what I'm talking about, it's not scary, or intimidating at all.

From the start of the "Spawning Action" section of the rules:
One of the most terrifying things about fighting the Tyranid army is there seems to be no end to the number of creatures in the army.

And later:

To represent this endless stream of claws Tyranid formations can carry out a Spawning Action during the Rally Phase.

I'd hardly say the current Spawning results are "terrifying" or "endless", in fact, most of my opponents have found them to be something of a joke.  I don't want to have my Swarms "magically" replenished every turn or anything as extreme as that, but having a single Carnifex show up or two Raveners and a Hormagant really doesn't seem like much at all.

A Necron Lord (Yes, they're still experimental) can return restore a formation from one unit back to almost full strength in a single turn, while a Hive Tyrant can get back a single buddy?  Just doesn't seem right to me.

Steal away.  FW ripper and a genestealer feeder tenticle head.

OOPS!!! ????

excuse me... RAGNAROK,

That thing is sweet! mine was too big (as a WE), yours is PERFECT!!!

How is this -

Malanthrope
Type / Speed / Armour / Close Combat / Firefight
Armoured Vehicle / 20cm / 4+ / 3+ / -
Weapon / Range / Firepower / Notes
Ripper Tentacles / (base contact) / (assault weapons) / Extra Attacks (d3+2)
Notes: Reinforced Armour, Walker, Infiltrator, Invulnerable Save, Fearless, Inspiring, Synapse (2d3-1)

200 points

Better than before I hope...

Actually I am not oppost to this being Infantry at 4+RA. That would make for 4 WE, 2 AV and 2 INF. What do you think?

As much as I like praise, it's ragnarok's creation, not mine... very inspiring!

Edit: And probably the necrons "we'll be back" needs to be looked at with a more critical eye...

Actually, I've never had a problem with it with Necrons, it makes them suitably scary and it, essentially, takes them an action to do it.

It is a bit good IMO.  The malanthrope isn't the king of combat.  If it is lucky it might kill one or two enemies

A while back I made a version which was
type: AV, speed: 15cm, save: 3+, CC4+ FF6+
weapons
talons, base contact
ripper swarm, small arms, one attack per enemy unit within 15cm
notes: fearless, Inv save, synpase, walker
price about 50 - 75pts

I worked on the principle that a malanthrope would be surrounded by a sea of rippers, thus any enemies that got too close would have their ankles nibbled on, thus it has a semi decent FF

Actually I am not oppost to this being Infantry at 4+RA. That would make for 4 WE, 2 AV and 2 INF. What do you think?

I wouldn't make it Inf.  It is deployed as a single MC size model.

Is it just me or does "old, new, borrowed, buggy" sound more like a Kult of Speed than Tyranids?
:p

I think the Malanthrope either deserves a 20cm move or 15cm infiltrating... he's as fast as a genestealer in 40k.

Ok, I hear what is being said and I concede to those that know its stats in 40K better than I do. Here is my latest amalgam of his profile:

Malanthrope (175 points, Synapse Creature Group)
Type / Speed / Armour / Close Combat / Firefight
Infantry / 15cm / 4+ / 3+ / 6+
Weapon / Range / Firepower / Notes
Ripper Tidal Swarm / (15cm) (small arms) / Extra Attack (+1 per enemy unit w/in 15cm)
Piercing Talons / (base contact) / (assault weapons) / Macro Weapon, Extra Attack (+1)
Notes: Reinforced Armour, Walker, Infiltrator, Fearless, Inspiring, Synapse (2d3-1)

I know he is a Monsterous Creature, but here is my reasoning on the making him Infantry. He's meant to lead rippers, so it follows that he is most likely meant to have termagants, hormagaunts and such in tow.

We already have 4 WE and 2 AV synapse, with only the TW as Inf Synapse. Why not make the Malanthrope tough like a Terminator Stand with RA 4+? (note I removed the INV Save).

I gave him 1 macro CC attack so he isn't totally weak in B to B and used Ragnorok's +1 per FF idea.

He's cut to 15cm Infiltrate, as per E & C

He keeps Walker, Fearless and my own Spawning value of 2d3-1 giving him a spawn range of 1 - 5. He also keeps Inspiring  (as per several of you) making him unique among the other Synapse.

Finally this add up to at least 175 points, IMO. As INfantry he is easy to screen with troops, he has enough different abilities to make him interesting to field and as a medium price Synapse he helps round out the list.

Let's at least give it a spin.
