Then again, _I_ wouldn't dare to try and learn Japanese. Or Chinese for that matter. I hear that the tone of your voice is more important for the meaning of ?some (or was it most) words than the context. ?:O ?I have hard enough time trying to pronounce English.

I've heard the same thing about Oriental languages. I know for one of them (Laotian? Vietnamese?) there is a particular monosyllabic word which has 5 different meanings depending on the tone used to speak it.

As for pronouncing English, it doesn't help that it's not a phonetic language. English is primarily Germanic in syntax, with heavy French influence for the vocabulary, with some Latin and Greek words thrown in for good measure.  :D I do have sympathy for people learning English, especially when they encounter the words though, through, tough and bough, all of which are pronounced differently, but look very similar.

Yes, Thai is like this. The word for Tiger, and fire (I think, or shirt...) depend on the tone... and that is not so easy to tell for foreign ears.

A good friend of mine married a woman from Thailand.  He has steadily worked on it but developing the ear for it is quite a feat.

He was in Thailand and working on the language with his wife and a friend of hers.  After he said something the two of them stopped for a second and then burst into hysterical laughter.  Apparently, he had messed up an inflection and said something that was both silly and extremely obscene.

(He wouldn't tell me what it was, so don't ask. :p )

So are we going to get a translation for the rant at some point?

(I'm the master of the subtle hints, me)

I would love to learn what it says, if Hena still stands by his words after letting off some steam. :)

When I was in the ROK, I picked up a lot of "key" words and phrases, in a 2 year tour of duty ...  But lost most of that now without use.  I can usually tell what Asian language is being spoken, but understand little ... :D

I think I know what you're trying to say, Hena. I'm sure it was an excellent rant in Finnish.  :D
