Problem still is, if a _single_ soldier is out of command _whole_ squad has to go get him. The leader to rewind his spring (i.e. to get the poor soul back into command range) and the rest of the squad just to stay in commad range.

If you have single soldier out of squad command(how on earth you manage to do that without having squad leaders dead is beyond me but let's work on hypothical situation) you can have officer temporarily promote him(not like you have to be near him) and have him move up(and even shoot at enemy while at it). All you need to do is to ensure squad doesn't run away at equal speed but slows a bit to allow him to catch. And is ~1" slower really that big of a deal?).

In the MI vs MI tournament game my CAP lietnaunt spent most of his game behind big hill commanding various leaderless-squads so that I would have some form of army(darned cruise missile had blew best part of my remaining army due to my mistake and included squad leaders of 2/3 of my remaining squads).

I for one am quite pleased about this - I've fancied trying out SST but I have enough on my plate with Epic, 40K, BFG etc to paint.  So pre-painted bugs & mobile infantry would definitely tempt me in to the game!

Plus the modern warfare stuff is interesting - I can see the tanks especially being a big hit with collectors.

Oh yes, the modern stuff sounds interesting although I confess I'm more interested in the background.  As I doubt we'll see a Finnish armylist.

Finnish bugs perhaps? :p
And then they'll round off with Maltese Paramecia.

Regarding modern game. There's going to be around next summer internet based campaign for it(I guess similar in principle as eye of terror etc for GW). Guess if it works we can see in future similar for SST and maybe other miniature games(ACTA comes to mind most easily).

And as for Finnish armylist: If enough Finns would get interested maybe :D Hey if they are concidering Sweden army as maybe then why not Finns. Though does Finnish army actually have anything worthwhile enough to make army out of :-/ We might be able to hold our own against countries south of us...

Though maybe Finnish peacekeepper squad could eventually be released . That's about only MEANINGFULL purpose Finnish military has anymore.

Mmmm.....I would love to get  into SST.   I have a copy of the orginal Avalon Hill (?)  hex based wargame, and love the book and the background.  Pre-painted stuff does make it more tempting, since I already have a massive list of Epic to paint anyway :p

Warseer has a thread on this, with some pre-painted pictures...

Pictures themselves are just ripped off from mongoose's own thread(linked in the opening message).

However seems that this actually can work like Mongoose wanted(to bring more life to the game). Quite a few already have said interest to start the game if quality remains as good as pictures show.

Good good. Game is great so more players will be great   . And since those who like to paint/convert aren't screwed either I'm happy boy.

Got to use this to convert one person into SST. He's infamously slow painter(and doesn't like painting) with epic models so this leaves him no excuse to try the game

Beg to differ.

All I'm saying is, since you know that for sure why don't you give me the 7 right for next week's lotto?

Lol! How predicting future is needed to say that Finnish military is a) so small b) so poorly equipped that pretty much only country that might invade us and we might handle would be baltic countries.

For example Russian would conquer Finland in matter of weeks if they would like. Superior numbers+superior technology does not pose good for Finland. And unlike WW2 we wouldn't have Stalin executing any general with intelligence from russian army pre-war this time.

Our best defence is trying to ensure nobody finds it worthwhile(which comes down to: Is there anything in Finland to justify invasion and  political issues it's going to raise world wide) to invade us.

Okay maybe we could also defeat some african countries but those are going to travel long way to invade us obviously...

Finland has small army with hardly impressive equipment. How on earth they COULD fight back any major country? Finnish "sisu" won't help against everything.

Hell if anything Russian could simply bomb our armies out of their way with their state of the art artirelly. And we don't have even all that good defensive terrain...(Forrest? Bomb forrest away. What forrest?)

A friend gave me a demo game of SST the other week and it does seem like a well thought out system, the mechanics didn't get in the way of two novices (with an experienced tutor) actually putting in some tactics with our small forces.

The really stand out feature for me was the force level/mission objective system.  That seems to have been well thought out and is a very elegant way of creating a blanced game without resorting to the bland format of exactly equal forces with matched abilities on exactly equal terrain trying just to wipe each other out to a man.

Yep. That is one of my favourite aspects as well as it gives nice choises and variety of different goals. Do I want to take more of the "cool" stuff like air assets and nukes(or in case of arachnids more tunneling support or even endless tide of warriors) which will result in harder scenario objectives(plus increased chance of opponent getting to choose who deploys first and goes first or deploys second and go second) or will I make do with less special stuff and more of basic stuff and get rewarded with easier objectives.

But THE most favourite aspect in the game for me is just how dynamic game is. In that regards it is very similar to Epic Armageddon as the two forces are constantly on the move and not like 40k IG where you won't see much of moving...In SST mobile infantry isn't called MOBILE infantry for nothing. Heck when I play MI you won't be seeing me standing around much(well unless you are completely surrounded in which case you are either dead or you are marauder and trying to clear the path for yourself).

But to put my words where my mouth is I'll be playing tomorrow SST game(2000 pts of MI vs arachnids. And despite not having added anything to my MI's(except for the standard bearer model) I have managed to do notable change in the style of the list to tournament list(making it even more mobile ). I'll be putting battle report(with pictures. Got new camera afterall so have to play around with it now don't I?-) as soon as I get it done(turn by turn).

This ought to be fun. First time we have 2000 pts worth of bugs after I reinforced them a bit on the ropecon(cue one seriously large plasma bug(and seriously misbalanced in terms of model trying to fall down constantly) and 6 blaster bugs).

Depends on what you mean by "handling".

Finnish army will, of course, never be so strong as to withstand an all-out assault by a superpower who wants to conquer Finland no matter what.

Wars, however, are seldom, if ever, fought with "no matter what" mentality. There's always a eason. More often than not that reason is economic.

Finnish army needs only be strong enough to make the Conquest of Finland economically unfeasible. It's a matter of having believable defense. Although I have no doubt about your response to this one.

"Small", again I beg to differ. "Poorly equipped", not yet although at "medicorely equipped and getting worse" we're unfortunately getting there fast. With budget cuts being made all the time it's only a matter of time.  :(  Finnish army was poorly equipped from late 40's to late 50's after which the situation started to get better only to take a turn for worse in late 90's again.

But I doubt we can find a comon ground so maybe it's best to leave this topic as I doubt anybody else is interested.
