The tau have been experimenting with advanced datalink systems to allow vessels to blanket an area with firepower, allowing longer ranges, at the expense of damage.
Although it does require skilled personnel and well-programmed AI's to pull off, when successful, it lets the Tau extend their ranges quite well.
Game effect: Can only be performed by ships in the same squadron, and rolling a single Leadership test. Can only be performed with WB, not Lances. If the test is successful then:
1) Decide how many ships are going to be taking part in the firing. For every ship included, the range of the weapons used is increased by 15 cm (max range is 60 cm)
2) Compare the WB rating of all the ships participating. The lowest one is used to determine which row in the WB table is to be used.
3) The range is measured from the furthest ship participating to the target, not the closest.
So 3 escorts, one with WB 6, one with WB 5, and one with WB 4 all with 30 cm range weapons, see an Eldar battleship at 55 cm range from the farthest in the group. Individually, they could not hope to hit the ship. However, the Air Caste crews have trained together, and the AIs have added copies of their routines to each other, allowing them to nearly predict what the other is going to do.
They manage to roll under the Squadron Leadership, and the vessels begin a closely coordinated barrage towards the Eldar vessel. There are 3 vessels, which means that the coordinated fire adds 30 cm (3-1 = 2 extra ships, each adding 2*15 cm to the range), for a total of 60 cm range. The Battleship is in range, and the Tau player has to roll dice.
Of the three ships participating, thelowest WB value is 4, so the Tau player uses the '4' row on the WB table for lookup purposes.
If the squadron had dumped the WB 4 escort, they would be using the '5' row, but would only have 45 cm range.
Blast fire upgrades. Tau drone forces are being test-equipped with new short-range ammunition, designed for far more damage, but at closer ranges. Each WB that the Tau player wishes to convert to be capable of Blast Fire raises the price of the vessel by 10 pts. If the Tau player wishes to leave things to his admiral (aka not spend the points), then each escort that attempts to fire in Blast Fire mode rolls vs the Admiral's leadership. Note: EACH Escort rolls.
Game effect: Range of the WB is 15 cm, double the WB rating.

I must say I quite like the long range option, I'm not too sure on the sort ranged option.
The long range upgrade has a real good Tau feel to it.
