And you know....for the wider hobby that isnt a bad thing.
It means the <20 crowd then discover the wider, wonderful world of wragaming and might even get interested in *gasp* REAL history rather than the rcycled trash they have been reading to date

Quote (Hena @ 12 June 2006 (04:48)) | And I asked about the minis from a Independent store. As I wanted them to start carry epic minis. And the person there said that GW won't sell the minis to independents for stores, but only for direct orders to customers. So there was no chance to do that. | Should've guessed.
Plus GW still owes me for the 5 issues of Fanatic magazine I didn't get when they shut it. The only way I can get the compensation they promised is to do a mail order via one of their stores. AFAIK they don't do mail orders for Epic.

Trying to stire up a bit of a response from GW, doubt I'll get it. Can only try though, might get a sneak preview of models and rules at best, might get told to go away at worst!

Oh, mail order works fine. I've bought my marine army by going to a GW shop and browsing specialist games catalogue. They had sheets to mark things up and then they called the order ahead. It was quite fast too in some cases (half a week). Others took few weeks, probably due to fact that they don't have a large amount of epic in warehouse. |
Really? I remember hearing from somewhere that they don't do mail order for Specialist Games as the products are direct only. Well, so much for relying on second hand info; serves me right. Hope they accept orders in phone as I happen to live some 160km north from Helsinki.

I don't know about Europe but in the US independent stores can get the full SG range. The drawbacks are that it is a separate ordering system from the Big 3, has its own minimum orders, and has lower profit margins for the retailer.
All in all, they are making it quite difficult but it's not impossible.

On a semi-related note, GW is apparently re-aligning their retail operation. They are bailing on most of the "Mills" stores (the Mills Corporation mega-malls) and going to more high-end strip mall/commercial district "destination" locations instead. They have much lower overhead. The fact is that the high volume of foot traffic generated by megamalls that they charge such outrageous prices for has very little benefit for GW and cuts seriously into their net profit.
Of course, that means that the local store here is closing in 2 weeks...

This is correct. Separate distribution channel. The discount is a mere 20% (making it virtually impossible or improbable any brick and mortar shop will buy it). I have yet to find out what the minimum order is, but the first two are enough to make retailers shy away from this product.

I'm not sure what the minimum order is now, but during the E40k era it was something like 6 of every blister just to get started. For a mom and pop hobby store, that's a lot of blisters, especially if some of those blisters don't sell.

THe minimums in the "old days" as you mention, were multiples of 6 and 12, or called a "slieve". It made getting stuff for the retailer difficult. Thats why I have so many epic figs, becuase back then I ordered in multiples of 6 and 12.
Later on the order minimums were money based on certain quantities at retail price. Used to be 500, dont know what it is now.
