Hi,

this has been brought up before but never received a definite answer. To quote Hena in a previous topic :

When using portal sync, is it enough to be within 15cm to get off board or must one move to the Monolith itself?

In other words, do you measure distances from the second Monolith or from the actual starting point of the formation?

I think this should be clarified in a future version of the list, as right now it is open to interpretation.

I have been poked!

:p

To answer your question:  The origional intention was to have it much like it was in 40k, where they just get pulled out and then walked out the Monolith.

Then, I got a different idea when typing on the 4.0 version. That it might be more balanced to require it to be a move for them.

Then I realized, I'd never really had a chance to test it the first way to see if it really WAS unbalanced.

So It seems I made a mess of things.

So I will ask this of you guys:  Go forth and try the synchronized portals both ways, and let me know which you think is the more balanced option, and why, and we can go from there.

Hi Corey,

old topic, new reply.  :)

I've played a bit more with my Necrons now and used portal sync several times.

I've mostly used it by teleporting all troops in a radius of 15cm and then measuring their move from the second Monolith (option A), but I think it might just be better to measure from the actual starting point of the troops, who would then have to move towards the first Monolith before coming out of the second one (option B).

That said, I'm still unsure : with option A, the Necrons usually have to "waste" an activation to move a Monolith in the middle of a formation and then sync out ; with option B, the Necrons cannot move as far when coming out of the second Monolith because they have had to move towards the first Monolith before that (making assaults a bit more difficult), so its another kind of drawback.

What do you guys think about it? Have you tried it out?

In our Necron games the 15cm "scoop" radius hasn't been a problem.

Forcing the acting formation to move to the first Monolith and then complete the move with whatever movement is left seems a bit fiddly.

So, do you measure to the individual bases (meaning ALL of them have to be within 15cm) or just to one base? In 40K scale it's just as long as at least one model is within that range. But I'm not sure how fair that'd be in Epic-scale. Both would work depending on what your goal is I suppose, I'd lean towards the later myself.

We played it that the whole formation had to be within 15cm of the Monolith.

We played it that way too.

Otherwise it would be way too easy for Necrons to use portal sync. Right now they just have to work for it, which is just as well in my opinion.  :)
