I have started to get into CAV from Reaper recently. I have the first edition rules, and the two Journal of Recognitions, which give some very interesting background to the game.
Second edition is being developed, and is currently very overdue. Reaper are taking this game to be much more similar to Warlord, making it another RAGE game with their mechanics. To me, this has both good and bad aspects. The game looks to be more tactical as a result, with the different special abilities and rules coming to the front. However, I was not a big fan of the RAGE system for Warlord. It tends to group weapons into a single dice roll, which for me loses some of the character. Things are not as bad for CAV, since there are three types of ranged attack that a CAV can have - direct, missile and indirect.
Although Maksim offered to check out some cheap CAVs for me (which I appreciate), I decided to order direct. This is because I want to build my force with specific CAVs. My first order (placed today) consists of two forces of four and five CAV minis.
The minis are actually really cool. So, if anyone has any experience of playing the game that they can share, feel free to post, or if anyone has questions about the game then just ask.
Thanks.

I actually bought myself a few of their miniatures, back when there were only eight varieties or so. I like the sculpts, but some of mine were miscast; there were visible bubbles (as if they hadn't been centrifuged) and the metal was surprisingly brittle. Nevertheless, they're great-looking miniatures. (The newer models don't excite me quite so much.)
I've skimmed the beta rules for the second edition, and I agree with you; I'm surprised that the weapons are combined the way they have. Part of the issue for me is that the army card don't even tell you what weapons the units actually have!
I don't think I would mind the streamlined mechanic if there was some flavour text to tell me about the vehicles. In Epic, a 4+ isn't really that distinctive, after all. The special designations look like they might make up for it. I'm intrigued by the way that certain designations only have an effect in the campaign game, such as "ammo hog".
But I confess, I've never played!

I even posted on the CAV board the same issue. Doing things this way de-couples the stat line from the mini, and I like the mini to be a faithful representation of the unit according to its stats. That being said, while this puts me off Warlord a lot (I like there to be a difference between my Dwarf axes, Ork daggers and Elven swords!), the way that it is handled in CAV is better. Sure, all direct attacks are lumped together, but since most CAV designs have direct fire weapons in the arm mounts, a direct fire missile pack and an indirect fire missile pack, you usually just have to bundle the two arm mounts together and you end up with three strikes, instead of the original four. And even this I can certainly live with where the two arm weapons are the same type (which is normal).
The only real issue for me is in cases such as the Knight, which has two different arm weapons, one of which is a flamer - and this must be represented by a special ability.

Part of the issue for me is that the army card don't even tell you what weapons the units actually have! | PS: If you want flavour text, then you really need to get the two Journals of Recognition. They are the 'Janes Guide' for CAV and are excellent buys. Every single CAV, tank, transport and gunship has a two-page spread, detailing manufacturing background, battlefield performance and stats such as height, tonage and weapons/equipment fits.
A sample (for the Mastodon) is here (hosted by Mil-Net):
http://www.mil-net.net/articles/mastodonpdf.pdf
This really brings the CAVs alive, and even gives background to the weapon development and sales figures. Really interesting reading.
As to the minis, I must admit that I like a lot of the newer CAVs alongside the older ones. My nine which I purchased are:
Chancellor Mantis Sabretooth Thunderbird Tiger Blitz Jaguar Mastodon Knight
These consist of the designs that I really like most, some from the specific faction (Ritterlich) and some from any faction for my mercenary force - and I had to narrow it down to nine for financial reasons!

Hi Iain,
I apologize about the used CAVs. I've been by the shop once and they were closed early that day. I haven't had a chance to stop by since.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

No problem at all. As I said, I decided to purchase the ones that I like the look of, rather than than getting a load cheaper. Thanks for checking anyway.

Ohh, me likey lots! I have a Mantis on the way, and I had already decided on a very similar paint scheme. Cool. In other news, I managed to win a Spider and a Spartan on EBay, and they arrived yesterday. I hope to start hacking at these two after the weekend and will update with pictures as and when they are ready for their public.
I might steal that Centurion colour scheme for my Spartan!

Ummm no. Mainly because they are not completed yet! They are on the list of things to paint... somewhere after DRM (which usurped them for my attention!). Also, the third 'concrete release date' for CAV2 is 1st August!

Dont worry. In the unlikely event that I actually finish a mini, I will ensure that the entire world knows about it!
