Quote (Markconz @ 17 Jan. 2006 (02:04)) | Quote (Dwarf Supreme @ 16 Jan. 2006 (14:47)) | I agree about the scenery, Pete Jackson certainly knows how to pick it. I remember sitting in the theater, watching Gandalf drive his cart over the hill into The Shire and, like you, I thought, this is exactly what the Shire looks like! What I found very interesting was that a year before filming, he had new plants planted so that they would be fully grown a year later to blend in well with existing vegetation. |
Hmm. I guess the advantage of a location like New Zealand is that most people will not recognise it, and it looks exotic. It was weird for us New Zealanders though.
The shire looks like a typical Northland sheep farm taken over by hobbits. Rohan looks like Castle Rock Hill down the road from where I live. etc.
I think I've said it before, but it often felt like I was watching a bunch of Live Action Roleplayers running through my backyard ? | I kind of know what you mean, Markco. Way back when I was in high school, a rather bad movie was filmed in my hometown. It was weird to see my town on the screen.

Weird. I started reading page 8 of this thread and everywhere the word "new" occured it was in red! I went back in the thread to see if I was just missing a joke. Now everything is normal... Anyone else experience this before?

Thanks Jimbo. That is some strange behaviour... I thought I was missing something when the "New" in New Zealand and New York were in bright red. Like being at a party and you're the only one not ing

Quote (primarch @ 13 Jan. 2006 (20:18)) | Hi!
I'll be frank, while I love the books, I also love the films. What he left out and changed is okay in my view. It made for an entertaining film. I dont think an ad verbatim version of the books would have been as much fun to watch.
Then again I personally dont like Bombadil (always skip over that part of the book) and the battle of the shire I always thought overkill and anticlimatic after the REAL end with the victory and Gondor.
Primarch | I agree with all 3 points.
I was annoyed that Saruamn dd n't feature in the theatrical release but did n't miss Sharkey at all.
Cheers
James

Quote (Mojarn Piett @ 16 Jan. 2006 (15:42)) | But I doubt The Return of the King is better than the Fellowship of the ring. ? | I agree
I remember how pskyed I was when I saw the first online teaser of Gandalf's cart crossing a little bridge. I know it is sad but I just thought it was so awesome to see even a little glimpse of the way that PJ brought the world of Tolkein to life on screen.
I watched FOTR twice at the cinema which is rare for me- I normally watch films the once and wait for DVD. (Other exceptions have inlcuded Revenge of the Sith & Spiderman2.) I still marvel at how great it all looks from the Shire, Weathertop, Rivendell, Moria....
Even more so since I have now seen many of the filming locations for the 3 films in the flesh when I went to NZ last year. Stunning scenary.
My favourite of the 3 films would probably be TTT- mainly because of Helms Deep.
Cheers
James

On no- quadruple post- sorry!! I also thought the battle scenes in ROTK were n't as realistic as TTT. Watching Helms Deep I really struggled to tell the difference between real acting & props and computer generated scenes.
Watching ROTK it was immediately obvious which scenes were computer generated (and I do realise that was due to the size of the battle scenes in ROTK). I liked it when you could n't tell.
Cheers
James

Not always, there are alot of people who just don't want to sit down and watch a 3 hour long movie. Lots of people think 1,5 hours for a movie is long enough.
To get those people to the cinema movies are kept shorter as they could be.
