Hmmmm....

I think my first RPG was Advanved D&D in about 1989-90 (maybe earlier)
First wargame:  Star Fleet Battles *shudder*

The game that pulled me into the GW universe was Advanced Space Crusade.

Yah, it get's better the further it gets from me.  :;):

SFB had some issues in my opinion, but we played hundreds of games up to and including a couple of starbase assaults.

It's rather fiddly, but back in high school we had nothing better to do than read the books until they were nearly memorized.

Of course, I haven't played it in 15+ years, so that's probably saying something, too.

TSR's old Battlesystem game was one set that introduced people to wargaming via RPG's.

For anyone who has the 2nd Edition battlesystem rules I have been running a campaign using it and some "home-made" army lists.  If anyone is curious please email me I will be happy to send a copy of army lists/campaign rules.

First Wargame: Risk
Game that got me started on the GW path: Blood Bowl

A friend of mine and I were just talking the other day. Were we talking about how the good memories can sometimes make a game seem better then it is. In our case we were talking about playing ?classic? Battletech. He had remembered how much fun we had so he agreed to go play with some new guys. He hated the game and was shocked. I believe the fun time was being together and not the rules set.

Anyway, I am sure you guys had fun. I just never did with that game.

Yep.  That probably has a lot to do with it.

Agreed. I can think of a couple games which bring back fond memories, but I have no desire to play now.

To be fair though, your experiences since then mave generlaly been with more mature and developed games.

Go back and play with your Commodore 64 or Atari and see if that still measures up! :D

Lost me with this one, what comment was this linked to?  ???

Oh and as a side note, I bought one of those 19.95 boxes with 20 or so Atari games on it. Maddy and I have both been having a blast with it. But that is for another thread.

it may have helped if I could spell too... ???

I meant generally that looking at 'retro' games you enjoyed in the past isnt very fair either because you hve a different reference plane now. ?I used to love my Commodore 64 computer as well and had hours of fun with it, but compared to a Pentium 4 etc.... ?

Doesnt mean I didnt love my C64 back then or that for its time it wasnt a great machine :)

Ah got it, sort of how I feel about my large plastic green army men. At 6 years old, I was happy to just line them up and knock then down. Now I line my army men up, roll some six sided dice, and then knock them down...  :oo

Hay, wait a moment...  :o

Guess some of us are not as grown up as others.

Good point, Tas. Hadn't thought about it like that.  :D  Oddly enough, though, I can think of a couple of Atari games I would still play.  :p

Hey, I still play XCom (heck, I still have the original DOS version somewhere, never mind the Collector's Edition, with all 3 games!) ... Oh, yeah, you brits call it UFO:  Enemy Unknown, BTW.

I still play some of the original PSX games (looking for a copy of Suikoden 1.  Anybody got a copy they're willing to sell?), like Bushido Blade, any/all of the Final Fantasies, Chrono Cross...  But those are still 'top-line' games (and still look GREAT).  Any game with 150+ hours of gameplay (that you need to play 3 more times to finish) is an outstanding example of what to do right in a game.

It's not an Atari game, per se, but I know people that still play Pac-man!
