This is a quoted cut and past topic from Wargamer.au written by a newcomer to the EA scene, and a friend of mine. He has done a really good job of explaining how engage actions work and how the Space Marine double Thunderhawk Terminator assault bus works.

I think you will agree he has done a splendid job.

works for me. because there's not a clause saying you can't not do it you can.... ha!
ok, after an initial brain dump and some editing the following are the results... intended for newer players (aka the collected research i wish i'd had).

hopefully it will be of help to someone, someday. if you happen to find something wrong, missing or unclear please let me know and i'll edit accordingly.

Based on his how to do engagements for beginners in Epic Armageddon (and the Space Marine air taxi assault, I have designed a nice list for Dark Eldar to benefit from the same tactics.

DE 2017 1,0 test army - List 8 (12 Activations) 41 Units
(50)
50 points – portable wraithgate
(925)
375 Points – Coterie – Archon, 6 x Incubi, 2 x Wyches [BTS]
325 points – Flotilla – Dracon, 5 x Ravagers
225 points – Flotilla – 4 x Ravagers
(1225)
250 points – Heavy Barge – Vessel of Pain
250 points – Heavy Barge – Vessel of Pain
250 Points – Reavers – Succubus, 6 x Reavers
250 Points – Reavers – Succubus, 6 x Reavers
225 points – Talos – 4 x Talos
(800 )
200 points – Slave Bringer
200 points – Slave Bringer
200 points – Razorwings – 2 x Razorwings
200 points – Razorwings – 2 x Razorwings

This list is based on the new 2017 1.0 DE test list.

Nice article for newcomers! Spare aircraft to recycle air assaults is definitely a viable tactic in some lists.

There's a mistake in the article though, that should be corrected. On p17 it claims a formation with only small arms but no ranged attack can still place a BM for a shooting action but this isn't the case - on p14 of the tournament pack there's a question/note at the bottom asking about this and the answer is that no, they can't do that.

In addition units in btb with friendly units in btb with an enemy unit may not use their cc value but must ff instead

Nice writeup, with useful pictures and actual examples of rolls and results. I like it :)

Two nits and an opinion, though:

Quote:
Caveat - Two rows
If you have two friendly Units of infantry in base-to-base contact then
both of those Units will use CC against the enemy Unit. Note: this is
analogous to vehicle cover saves.

I don't think this is actually the case - a unit must be in base to base contact with an enemy unit in order to use its CC value. Being in B2B with a friendly unit that is in B2B with an enemy unit is not enough.

Quote:
Important: Units with „Small Arms‟ only can actually perform a Ranged Attack
Action (i.e. an Advance Action). They cannot cause any damage to the enemy
Formation but it will add the mandatory +1 BM for when a Formation getting
shot at. Units with „Small Arms‟ are subject to being supressed for such Ranged
Attacks however (but not for FF).

I don't think this is true either; You need an actual shooting attack in order to place BMs. The shooting attack my be unable to inflict hits (eg, shooting AP at an armoured vehicle), but can still place a BM.
I agree that units with small arms only can be counted for suppression, per 1.9.2 Q&A.

Quote:
Librarian – worth taking? [marines specific]
[Quote from Wargamerau]
“Chaplins are the go. +1 to combat res is better then a macro shot FF”
It is generally acknowledged that the Chaplain is one of the better options to add
to a Unit intended for Close Combat use. Librarians are a Marines specific Unit
type and are a rather „meh‟ option (they have Extra Attack for CC or FF).

This is opinion only, but I think Librarians are actually better in Devastator formations than Chaplains. Assuming that the formation engages in FF only, and wins the engagement (that's what devastators are supposed to do, after all), the Librarian would inflict 0.67 extra hit (from the MW FF), and an additonal 0.67 extra damage to hackdown. The odds of winning the engagement goes down slightly (0.67 hits vs the +1 inspiring) but the damage to the target goes up slightly (0.67 damage + 0.67 hackdown vs +1 hackdown).

In addition, the MW FF synergizes nicely with using the devastators for support fire in engagements.

Quote:
It is worth noting that the disembarking troops cannot move (i.e. shuffle up into
base-to-base) after disembarking.

But also worth noting that the disembarking "move" is actually units placed within 5cm of the transport vehicle - they don't travel the intervening distance from the vehicle to where they disembark to. This can be useful to get CC units into base contact with FF-oriented enemy units hiding behind a wall of other units in the same formation.

Also worth noting that when disembarking from an air assaulting aircraft, units with Jump Packs disembark up to 15cm away from the vehicle - so Assault Marines can typically get into B2B with whatever units in the target formation they like.

EDIT: Ninjaed...

Might also be worth mentioning that with disembarking from transports the 'within 5cm' means some part of the stand within 5cm and not that the entire stand need to be within 5cm.

This guys a new guy and big pat opn the back for doing this. Its actually propbably helping him heaps as well writting it to understand the rules. ill give him this link to come have a look and fix anything up if he wants to share it around.

also just he last comment glynG this could be a 5 minute warm up thing.

Q. When disembarking, are transported units placed completely within 5cm of the transport unit or just so one part of the transported unit is within 5cm of the transport unit.
A. You can play it either way, just bring it up in the five minute warm up.

I have let him know on Wargamer.au, so he can make the necessary changes.

should probably add a note about counter charging into other formations that were not part of the assault due to having to counter charge nearest enemy unit. (I realise this would be part of step III and the guide starts at IV, but as you can counter charge again after a tie/draw in step V it is relevant here)

also, might have missed it (long guide!), but need to mention the +1BM to units that are in support fire range of a friendly unit that loses in assault. This is very useful for prepping a second formation
