So I finally decided to give my space marines a serious try. I originally bought it to be a air assaults list but I never got around to playing it. The few times that I have a tried I´ve been beaten so badly I couldn't even get out of bed the day after! Well after reading a few posts on space marine tactics on this forum I decided its time to give it a go. So I made an army for 3500 points for the grand tournament scenario composing mostly of units that I want to use because I think they are cool. But from what I understand from what I have read they could actually work, so please give me some feedback on the following list about what you think. As you might notice it's meant to be an air assault list.

Total Roster Cost: 3500

Detachment: Strike Cruiser Detachment (1#, 200 pts)
1 Strike Cruiser Detachment, 0 pts
1 Strike Cruiser, 200 pts

Detachment: Tactical Detachment (12#, 300 pts)
1 Tactical Detachment, 300 pts

Detachment: Tactical Detachment (12#, 350 pts)

Looks like a good working set of formations. I find that the force composition should work hand in hand with a rough plan of how to conduct the engagement. An important decision for space marines here is how to deploy the infantry - is it drop inf, airborne inf (or mechanized inf, which of course doesn't apply to you)? It looks like the Strike Cruiser is there to carry Drop Pods for the tactical formations, and the Assaults+Devs are going in by Thunderhawk? If you select Drop Pods, the list should show it.

Are you playing in a NetEA environment? If so, you may want to use the newer Codex Astartes list found here:

2012 Compendium: viewtopic.php?f=69&t=23686
2012 Tournament pack: viewtopic.php?f=69&t=23685

I can't recommend the Tournament pack enough - having the rules, the FAQs and the most common lists in one handy package is golden.

In the 2012 list, Tacticals a slightly cheaper, but Thunderbolts and Terminators are slightly more expensive.

I can see you're using a list building tool - there are a couple of good ones online, too:
http://traitor-legion.appspot.com/
http://www.brumbaer.de/Epic/AGen/index.html

On to concrete suggestions:

- I'd probably want my Supreme Commander in a formation that starts on the table, to ensure that I can have the reroll when I need it.

- You have very little in the way of Barrage and Macro weaponry, both of which are useful to deal with specific types of threats: The threat of barrages forces hordes to spread out and makes them easier to engage safely, and a few reliable macro shots helps a lot when dealing with war engines, or 4+RA targets that needs to be killed and not just broken. I'd suggest finding space in your list for Whirlwinds (for a nice cost-effective 4BP barrage) and a Warhound (for reliable MW shots, and objective grabs) or more Speeders (for MW firefighting, and for scouting / harassment screens). If you think the Whirlwinds are counter to the air-assault theme, you might use Marauders for the same purpose instead.

- This is a personal preference, but I'm a big fan of characters in Marine formations. It is great to be able to remove up to 5 blast markers completely on a successful rally. Being able to start a turn without blast markers at all is a huge advantage in engagements, and since marines are normally outnumbered 2-1, they really need that. I'd try very hard to fit in Librarians in the Devastator detachments. I can see you have Chaplains in your engagement formations; I approve wholeheartedly.

I must admit that I'm using on army builder to make the list so that is why I forgot to write where the drop pods and Thunderhawks goes but you figured it out correctly. That´s also probably why the points are incorrect, my bad, embarrassing mistake ;).

I like your idea about the marauders, that could really work as I agree with you on the necessity of blast points. Since I never use them I didn't think about them but they're totally in theme so I'll give it a go. About the macro weapons you are right, I find it hard to get into a space marine army. I had an idea that my terminators would take care of the reinforced armor. First squad teleports in close by and preps the targets, second squadron drops in and engages with supporting fire from the other squad. That way I can get some macro weapons in. I agree with you about the warhounds but for this army I don't want to use them. I tend to use them a lot and I want to try not using for a change. I never played with land speeders before so I thought one squad would be enough, but thinking about it maybe two isn't such a bad idea. I feel like I should drop one of the Thunderhawk combos to get in some marauders, land speeders and librarians. What do you think about that?

About the supreme commander of being on table at the start of the game I didn't know they have to be for them to work. Me and my buddies couldn't find it anywhere in the rules but we're probably wrong about that, it makes sense.
