I'm experimenting with a steel legion IG lately and wondered what people's thoughts were on storm troopers with valkaries? They look like a good but quite expensive and fragile unit to me. Do many folk use them and if so do they prefer a proactive assault supporting/leading role or a more defensive air in the blitz and plug gaps approach?

Lastly, i'm still weighing up whether they're better than a shadowsword and rough riders (which I'd take instead of them).

When they're played here, they're a target. They've got a lot of BP but I've never seem it used completely. You usually end up loosing a Valk before it shoots all of its rockets. They're great for FF assaults and support though, plus objective grabs.

I've used em a few times and like Dave says, they're a target, also for an extra 50 points you can have a mech infantry company who have 20 units as opposed to 12, are almost as fast, have longer ranged shooting, and unlock support slots rather than using them up, then for 50 points less you can take vultures who give you a massively long AT volley and can garrison on OW and cover your entire deployment zone against alpha striking air assaults and the like....

Their biggest problem is that they use up a support slot. Kills them for me. Most of the time I simply dont have the slots for them. SHT and RR are probably the better choice.

Yeah good unit but overpriced in this list for what they do and use. I'd take mech companies over them every time. They look damn cool however. There was a discussion about allowing the storm troopers to take chimeras as well but nothing ever really came of it (pity too)

Took a mech Co and vultures in the end. The vultures won me the first game against amtl with their shield stripping, objective grabbing antics. Think the list was 4-6th overall at tournament so not bad.

I think the problem with this formation is that two different roles are forced together. Valkyries are fast, short striking unit with hilarious one shot barrage, whereas storm troopers are good line support with scout ability and 4+ fire support.
The player will always struggle to choose one to sacrifice: line support or manouvre / strike.

For a year, I simply bring storm troopers on foot for 200 and place them along the objectives of my half, filling the gaps of other formations.
-Multiple objectives can be held by 1 formation.
-Good fire support or intermingle whenever you need on your half.
-8 infantry with 5+ armour, large scout screen is something that is hard to kill.
-Crap shooting range with 15 cm 5+/5+ is not a big waste to triple the formation wherever you need.

Personally speaking, the over powerful one shot weapon on the valkyrie (and vulture) is its Achilles heal - it's so deadly that people do everything to kill them and at the same time neuter the storm troopers. I'd much prefer to see a reduced but non-one shot load out on the Valkyrie and thereby give the guard a flexible mobile strike force and another string to their bow.

Either that or give the storm troopers access to chimeras (or taurox.)

I'd be surprised if the taurox would come out much different than the chimera when "epic-ified" but I will admit I've not seen the rules. Anyone have them?

The whole SS is a nice idea but I'd rather see units with just a less powerful regular attack as well. Leave the SS to those centerpiece large support weapons like Void Missiles or ICBMs.
