No Jan Winter Warmer next year?

Looking to do something else down South but we felt it was a duplicate of Counterattack. See if pushing 1 tournament can boost attendance rather than splitting over 2

Fair enough, that does make sense. I might be abroad in Jan anyway but am planning to attend most of the tournaments next year, I'm enjoying getting back into epic and the tournaments more.

I hope the Exterterminatus tournament might run again, perhaps slot it in April? I didn't make it due to something else clashing that day but the idea of one alternative scenario for variety was appealing.

I've no idea about Exeter as I've not heard anything from Ian

I haven't spoken to Ian specifically about running Exeter next year, but i'm definitely up for it and i sure he will be too. Now i'm living in town i should be able to take a more active role in the run up.

I know last year we ended up only a couple of weeks to one of the other tournaments, and also close to some big infinity events Ian was involved in. I'm wondering if we should aim to fill the Jan slot? Thoughts?

Will try to remember to discuss it next week at the club.

There was also talk of a second Scotland tournament. Maybe that could go the April/may slot?

I would have thought it would be better to run a single joint event to maximise participation? Then off the inevitable success of that, run 2 events next year?

That was my suggestion but John and the Lothian guys were really keen on 2 events over the year which don't require an overnight stay (as their nearest other epic UK tournie is Britcon which is a bit of purists event and still about 300 miles away). Sounds like they have enough players to make it work.

I'm still hoping for a campaign weekend myself.... But I guess they aren't so popular.....

Just thinking out loud - is any chance we could push Exeter into the autumn?

It is a common observation that all tournies in the SW area were between Jan and June with nothing later. Back in Cornwall, Epic playing tended to peak in the spring then die a death for the next 6 months. With Christmas in the way, many of the casual players didn't pick it up again quick enough to feel ready for the January WW, then the cycle repeated.

I've tried my best to counter this by getting people together for a minigeddon event in October for the last few of years, though this tailed off last year with me moving and this year i cant manage anything till Dec at the earliest due to house renovations.

Combined with the local wargame shows (plymouth-jan, exeter-april) was it is difficult for people to get a day release passes from the other halves.

Its a shame to loose the winter warmer but in a way it makes the grouping less extreme, but it might be good to spread the dates a little?

Haven't discussed it with locals yet, but thought it was worth thinking about.

Hey folks,

I've been talking to Dave Gillan who's keen to host a West Lothian tourney next year. He's also got a veritable goldmine of players (6 in one club and 2 in another).

My feeling is to try and run Mcpocalypse II in Glasgow in January, and then with a bit of momentum West Lothian in July.

I think we've got a good shot a swinging quite decent numbers (4 in Glasgow, 8 West Lothian area, 2 Newcastle, plus folks from further South). Should have ample space at my house again for people who might need free beds for a night or two.

What do folks think? Would that get the blessings from the EUK powers? Is that going to get in the way of plans for other tourneys at all?

Sounds good to me. Although unless global warming guarantees fine weather in January I would be unlikely to travel up then.

Is Dave specifically aiming for the event to be 'official', i.e. part of the championship?

I'm curious to know what the EUK committee feel the balance is like in terms of number of tournies vs number of players. Obviously it's good if people get the chance to go to tournaments that are nearer to them, but for some players that will inevitably result in them being less likely to travel further afield. e.g. midlands and london are not too bad for me travel wise so I'm very unlikely to go to a West Lothian or Exeter event. With a big enough playerbase it would be no problem to have one in the south west and one in Scotland on the same day even, but my feeling is we're not at that level, we still are dependent on several players who are graciously willing to travel long distances (whether out of desire to attend more championship events or necessity).
