It was a fun game
The Imperial side (Alun and I) definitely had the better dice in the first turn, although not so much in 2 and 3. The Eldar alliance managed to win the strategy rolloff all 3 turns, and had some impressive rallying rolls, between which helped them take and hold one of the flanks. I think if it hadn't been for getting initiative in turns 2 and 3 it would have been a brutal massacre though, so probably for the best that they did
The knights were very impressive though, helped along no end by some sterling armour saves from Alun! It was nice to see them focussed on rather than the titans though, so 'operation smokescreen' was a complete success imo
I think the Eldar did struggle a bit due to lack of synergy between units, and being a bit too cautious on the first turn. Being 30cm in rather than 15 meant they could have been on us ready to tear apart the good stuff in turn 2, but instead for most of the game we were able to keep them at a distance and shoot up the warlocks etc instead, which suited us just fine!
On the venue, not quite what i was expecting - the website makes it out to be a lot bigger for starters! I'd put it at a similar size (possibly a bit smaller) than Maelstrom games used to be - so not a bad size by any stretch, but for what they appear to aspirationally looking to be? Not ideal. It also has the issue that all large spaces have of becoming very noisy. Having to go up and down two flights of relatively narrow external stairs to get in and out (or to the bar/loos) wasn't great either, and location isn't ideal, either for driving (as there's effectively no parking, not even metered), and public transport is a good 10 - 20 minutes walk depending on which station you're coming from. Plus, the area is rough as guts, so while fine to walk to during daylight hours, i wouldn't want to be doing it by myself at night!
On the plus side, the food in the cantina was pretty reasonable both in terms of quality and price, and the gaming area itself has long opening hours (11am till 1am), although 11am opening is a bit of an issue for running an actual tournament there.
I'd definitely do another mega game at some point (maybe even more points too?
) but must say i wouldn't be keen doing the venue again - something like Dark Sphere or the Central London's club venue (the Escape bar in mornington crescent) both have better setups imo.
