The USA is geographically challenged when it comes to Epic.  Let's face it, folks, we have a big country here.  The Brits benefit from being a nice little island where you can throw a rock from one coast to the other, but here we've got mileage!

So I wanted to know if anyone has information on Epic tournaments here in the US, plans for future ones, and ideas for getting more.

Obviously we need more Epic players (a related issue).  But even smaller gaming meets (4-6 players) would be preferable to nothing.

Go!

Too bad you didn't move Northeast instead of South.  :p  I've had a few games with Dave and we're trying to get three more players involved.

I have no news of any tourneys in the Notheast.  :(

I'd be interested in a tourney but I'm on the West Coast.

The issue is really how far apart people are. It costs about $600 or so to cross the continent and there aren't a lot of people that will do that for a small tourney.

Again, that's the problem. There are lots of Epic players in the US and Canada, but look how far apart we are, generally speaking.

Hah - in Malta if you pick up a rock at one end and drop it, it might just fall off the other end.
And no Epic.
grump.

Maybe if you quit throwing rocks there would be more people to play games with? ;-)

The Boston Battle Bunker had an Epic tournament a year or two ago, it's disappointing that they didn't continue with it.  Or any other Battle Bunker for that matter.

I'd love for there to be more tournaments.  No that's not correct, I'd love for there just to be more games to be had.  But GW shops are really out of the question, I've never been offered an opportunity to play there.  Every time they come up and ask if I play, I say "Ya, Epic" and they just say "oh cool!" and walk away.

I haven't tried any third party stores, but getting new players into Epic is really hard given that the models have to come from eBay or GW and no where else.  I've found it's an older crowed too who generally have more time constraints than teenagers.

If we followed through with a East Coast Tournament sometime in Sept./Oct. I would definitely go though and try to persuade some others as well.

There are Epic players out there. We just need to get them online, really. I've been here in VA for a couple of years and I've only found a couple of people with Epic near here (although I've not got as far as actually getting regular games yet).

The internet is a great resource, but we need a better way of finding players out there. Quizzing people who play Warhammer at clubs whether they've 6mm models tucked away is a start!

I know of three or four people down here in miami, and once we are all organised we may play every now and then. One of the local stores would be willing to let us use the tables.

We were doing really well around here for a while.  However, out of the half dozen players we had, the last year has seen:

1 military reserve deployment
2 weddings/moving of houses
1 military enlistment
1 consulting contract for work 3 states away (2 weeks gone/1 weekend home)

Several of the occasional gamers have also wandered off as well.  Basically, we've gone from having enough players to run mini-events to the point that I'll be lucky to get in 1 game per month.  We were discussing methods for recruiting, but I think we've even dropped below the "critical mass" needed for that to work.

Time to start a new group by sheer force of will Neal.

I've done it twice now. :D

Memphis has a core group that comes out to play for tournaments. Myself and a friend play Epic every week.

In late October or early November we will be holding "SpecialistCon II" where there is a tournament for every Specialist game over one weekend. Epic, WMA, BFG and so on. A tournament counts as long as there are four players. Points are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The person with the most points is the overall champion!

Last year, I took 2nd in BFG, 1st in Epic and I chose BB for my third game, but no one showed up to play it, so I had to fight Greg Lane in Epic for the overall champion, which my mechanized Orks beat his Feral Orks. That last battle was one for the ages.

I'm Mark's almost-every week opponent here in Memphis. We generally have some kind of tournament twice a year. There's a hardcore of about 6 Epic players, and another handful of maybes and sometimes. There are also a few folks from Mississippi and Arkansas and West Tennessee who like to play but don't get to Memphis often.

We talk to people all the time who wander over at the Battle Bunker to watch us play Epic. There's "Well, I was thinking of getting an army...." but it doesn't translate too often into buying an actual army. Which is a shame, because the excitement and curiousity levels at seeing Epic are always pretty high.

The Battle Bunker is good about supporting us, but they've recently cut back space and stocking on Epic stuff (and SG stuff in general). On the other hand, the manager is really good about prize support and helping spread the word on Epic and our tournaments.

I'm up to a dozen players again now - in New Zealand of all places! You guys can't be trying hard enough!  :p

Maybe I've been unconsciously using my Jedi mind tricks on people?  (fringe benefits of the psychological profession... ?  :D)
