Had a game in Tabletop Simulator with the Alpha Legion against Norto that was playing Black Legion. Refrained from using the "I'm Alpharius!" rule this time around, instead taking a Daemon Prince on foot as supreme commander. This of course also means that I can take Sorcerers in all units instead of Lords.

Also decided to try out a formation of Lernaean Terminators in Spartan Assault Tanks (the army BTS), some Fire Raptors, some Macharius Tanks and a unit of Thudd Guns.

Turn 1 Setup:

Norto garrisoned his BTS by his blitz and a unit of Chosen by the midline, both on Overwatch. Alpha Legion could only garrison the Cultist unit with the Supreme Commander in it but declined to do so.

The Black Legion Death Wheels deploy on the flanks, while on the Alpha Legion side there's (from left to right) Predators , Hydras, Cultists w Light Transporters, Alpha Legion Marines w Rhinos and Vindicators, Macharius on the road, Spartans w Lernaean Terminators inside, Cultists w Daemon Prince and Hydra, Thudd Guns with Hydra and Destroyers.

The Black Legion space ship is scheduled to come in turn 1, carrying with it a formation of Chosen.

Alpha Legion, with a Strategy Rating of 5 vs 4 for the Black Legion, wins initiative in turn 1.

Turn 1 Activation 1 (Alpha Legion)

Having got the first turn, I realize that I've put my terminators inside my Spartans, and there's a Space Ship coming in turn 1 with a pin-point attack. That pushes me to the perhaps too aggressive move of doubling the Spartans towards the Chosen and using the formation's considerable firepower to killing one Rhino. Fearing the Space Ship barrage I consider retaining, but Norto informs me that he's forgot to plot the barrage, so I let him activate next.

Thuddguns Marshalls and moves forward.

The BTS Retinue by the Black Legion Blitz renews its Overwatch.

Chosen are 1 BM from breaking, so they Marshall and summon 2 Flamers

Turn 1 Activation 9 (Alpha Legion)
Fire Raptors ground attacks the Chosen, and are intercepted by the Hellblades. Defensive AA and a Hydra kills two Hellblades, but the remaining one kills one Fire Raptor. The remaining Fire Raptor kills 2 Chosen.

Turn 1 Activation 10 (Black Legion)
The Black Legion Retinue on the right flank doubles forwards and shoots at the Destroyers, giving them one BM.

Turn 1 Activation 11 (Alpha Legion)
Seeing that the Black Legion is setting up an engage on the Spartans w the Terminators, the Alpha Legion retinue doubles forwards and fires at the Black Legion Retinue, giving them 1 BM.

Turn 1 Activation 12 (Black Legion)
The Death Wheel on the left flank advances, shoots at the Hydra formation, kills one Hydra and breaks them.

Turn 1 Activation 13 (Alpha Legion)

The Alpha Legion Predators doubles and fires at the Death Wheel in response, knocking down 1 Void Shield.

Turn 1 Activation 14 (Black Legion)
The Retinue on the right flank marches up and captures an objective.

The Lightnings intercept the remaining Hellblade and shoots it down.

Turn 1 Activation 16 (Black Legion)
The Bikes doubles and adds to the troubles of the Alpha Legion BTS which feels like it is way too exposed to what's coming...

The Macharius heavy tank company doubles on the road and attempts to block off some possible ways the Chosen in the Dreadclaws might be coming from, and to give the Spartans some support. They fire at the Chosen, killing one and breaking them.

Turn 1 Activation 18 (Black Legion)

The Space Ship finally enters the battlefield. No barrage as Norto had forgot to plot it, but the Pin-Point kills one Spartan Assault Tank and Chosen are dropped behind the Macharius and the Cultists.

Turn 1 Activation 19 (Retain Black Legion)

The Chosen summons 4 Flamers, has to use a Supreme Commander re-roll to engage the Lernaean Terminators between the Macharius and the Alpha Legion Marines. After a ton of support fire, 2 Terminators (1 with the Sorcerer) and the Spartan Assault Tank are killed. Black Legion rolls pretty good saves and only loses 3 Flamers and 1 unit of Chosen. Alpha Legion loses the combat by one, but the Coils of the Hydra rule prevents them from taking any additional losses. The remaining two Terminators flee towards its own table edge, intermingling with the Destroyers and the Cultists. Black Legion is out of activations.

The Cultists on the left marches up and surrounds the Death Wheel, preparing for turn two.

Start of turn 2. Seeing how much stuff is going on already, Norto decides against teleporting his Terminators this round. Alpha Legion wins initiative.

Turn 2 Activation 1 (Alpha Legion)

Not really seeing any solid engagement opportunities (which in retrospect may or may not have been the right call), I decide to fire at stuff instead. The Destroyers sustains at the retinue, giving 3 BMs with their disrupt-causing Rad-Missile Launchers, killing 1 Marine.

Turn 2 Activation 2 (Retain Alpha Legion)
The Retinue continues this theme, sustaining at the bikes killing two.

Turn 2 Activation 3 (Black Legion)
The Black Legion retinue at the centre of the board decides that the nearby bikes and its daemons will give it an edge. It summons three Daemonic Beasts and engages the Alpha Legion retinue. It kills 1 AL Marine, 4 Rhinos and 2 Vindicators. It loses 3 Marines, 1 Rhino and 1 Daemonic Beast. Alpha Legion loses and breaks.

Turn 2 Activation 4 (Retain Black Legion)

The Death Wheel by the Cultists attempts to advance, fails, takes 1 BM and shoots at the cultists. 2 Cultists and 1 Light Transport are killed.

Turn 2 Activation 5 (Alpha Legion)

The Thudd Guns on the right sustains at the Black Legion Retinue by the objective, kills 3 Marines. The Retinue is 1 BM from breaking.

Turn 2 Activation 6 (Retain Alpha Legion)
The Lightning Interceptors ground attacks the Retinue, no kills but the BM they give breaks the Retinue.

Turn 2 Activation 7 (Black Legion)
The Bikes at the centre engages the Cultists by the Death Wheel. After two rounds of combat, only 1 Light Transport survives. The bikes loses two bikes and 1 Daemonic Beast. This is enough to break them as well.

Turn 2 Activation 8 (Retain Black Legion)
The Death Wheel on the right retains, fires at the Lernaean Terminators. No kills but the BM breaks them.

Turn 2 Activation 9 (Alpha Legion)

The Cultists with the Daemon Prince Supreme Commander summons a Daemonette and engages the Chosen that came out of the dreadclaws last turn. Loses the Daemonette, but combined with the nearby Macharius all Chosen are killed.

Turn 2 Activation 10 (Black Legion)
The other unit of Chosen, which are down to 1 Marine and 1 Rhino, marches to cover the Blitz.

Turn 2 Activation 11 (Alpha Legion)

The Alpha Legion Predators sustain fire at the Death Wheel on the left flank. It takes 3 damage and breaks.

Turn 2 Activation 12 (Black Legion)
The Black Legion BTS retinue doubles forwards and gives the Macharius formation 1 BM. Black Legion is out of activations.

Turn 2 Activation 13 (Alpha Legion)

The Hydras advance and fires at the Black Legion Retinue at the centre of the board, killing 1 Daemonic Beast.

Turn 2 Activation 14 (Alpha Legion)
The Fire Raptor manages to shrug off 3 BMs, and ground attacks the same Retinue. Kills another Daemonic Beast.

Turn 2 Activation 15 (Alpha Legion)
The Macharius formation attempts to advance, fails and gives the retinue at the centre of the board another BM.

Black Legion teleports in the Chaos Terminators next to the remains of the Alpha Legion BTS, and manages to avoid any Teleport Mishaps.

But unfortunately for the Black Legion, they fail to win the initiative yet again... Rolling a 6, Alpha Legion also gains 2 Daemons to the Daemon Pool.

Turn 3 Activation 1 (Alpha Legion)

Trying to save the BTS, the Destroyers advance and fires at the Chaos Terminators. No kills, but 3 BMs because of disrupt.

Turn 3 Activation 2 (Retain Alpha Legion)
The Thudd Guns attempt to sustain at the Chaos Terminators to break them. They fail to activate, takes 1 BM and gives the Terminators the last BM required to break them.

Turn 3 Activation 3 (Black Legion)
The Black Legion BTS retinue doubles up next to the Macharius formation and gives them 1 BM.

Turn 3 Activation 4 (Retain Black Legion)

The Death Wheel engages the Macharius formation on the side. The single Macharius that is participating in the combat is destroyed, and the formation is wiped out in combat resolution.

Turn 3 Activation 5 (Alpha Legion)
The Hydras sustain at the Black Legion Retinue in the centre, killing 1 Chaos Marine.

Turn 3 Activation 6 (Retain Alpha Legion)
The Lightning Interceptors ground attacks the same Retinue, kills 1 Rhino and the formation breaks.

Turn 3 Activation 7 (Black Legion)
The Deathwheel with 1 DC left doubles, fires at the Hydras. 1 Hydra is killed and the formation breaks.

Turn 3 Activation 8 (Alpha Legion)

The single surviving Fire Raptor ground attacks the Black Legion BTS. It takes 1 BM going in, and kills 1 Chaos Marine.

Turn 3 Activation 9 (Black Legion)

The Black Legion Retinue at the right flank doubles and gives the Thudd Guns another BM.

Turn 3 Activation 10 (Alpha Legion)
The Alpha Legion Retinue on the left doubles and shoots at the Death Wheel. It loses 1 shield and gets 1 BM.

Turn 3 Activation 11 (Black Legion)
The remaining Chosen formation w 1 Chosen and 1 Rhino Marshalls with a Re-roll, moves towards the Blitz. Black Legion is out of activations.

Turn 3 Activation 12 (Alpha Legion)

The Cultist unit with the Supreme Commander Daemon Prince summons 2 Plaguebearers and engages the BTS retinue that's supported by the Death Wheel. The BTS Retinue loses 1 Chaos Marine, Alpha Legion loses 3 Cultists, 2 Plaguebearers and its Hydra. The engage is completely even, but Alpha Legion loses the roll-off by two and breaks.

Turn 3 Activation 13 (Alpha Legion)
The Predators doubles and fires at the damaged Death Wheel. No damage but it breaks.

Turn 3 Activation 14 (Alpha Legion)
Since the game is going towards a forth round, the Lernaean Terminators are quite uncomfortable being close to the broken Black Legion Chaos Terminators that are huddling around in the lower right corner. They decide to gamble a bit, relying on their Coils of the Hydra rule to save them in case they lose and engage the Chaos Terminators with some support from the Thudd Guns. No damage on either side, the engage is completely even, but the Chaos Terminators lose the roll-off and are wiped out.


Start of turn 4

The Deathwheel by the Alpha Legion Blitz fails to rally. Both the single Hydra and the single Light Transport rallies.

Black Legion wins initiative (finally!). Alpha Legion rolls a 1 and loses two Daemons from the pool.

Turn 4 Activation 1 (Black Legion)

The Death Wheel on the right engages the intermingled Destroyers and the Thudd Guns. One Destroyer dies and the Death Wheel takes 1 damage. The engage is even, but the Death Wheel loses the roll-off and is broken.

Turn 4 Activation 2 (Retain Black Legion)

The Retinue on the far right engages the Thudd Guns, loses 2 Chaos Marines in the combat but wins. The surviving two Thudd Guns break.

Turn 4 Activation 3 (Alpha Legion)
The Destroyers advances and shoots at the Black Legion BTS in crossfire. They kill 1 Chaos Marine and causes three BMs.

Turn 4 Activation 4 (Retain Alpha Legion)

The Alpha Legion Retinue engages the Black Legion BTS with support from the Destroyers. 3 Alpha Legion Marines are killed against 2 Chaos Marines and the Obliterators. Alpha Legion loses the roll off by one, but takes no casualties due to Coils of the Hydra. Both sides break.

Turn 4 Activation 5 (Black Legion)
The Black Legion Retinue engages the Destroyers. The Destroyers are wiped out and causes no damage back.

Turn 4 Activation 6 (Alpha Legion)

The Fire Raptor ground attacks the bikes, killing three and breaking them.

Turn 4 Activation 7 (Black Legion)

The Chosen sustains at the Alpha Legion Predators, giving them 1 BM. Black Legion is out of activations.

Turn 4 Activation 8 (Alpha Legion)
The Lernaean Terminators march and contests the closest objective.

Turn 4 Activation 9 (Alpha Legion)
Lightning Interceptors fails to activate.

Turn 4 Activation 10 (Alpha Legion)
The lone Hydra doubles and fires at the Black Legion BTS which is down to 2 Chaos Marines and the Supreme Commander. The BTS takes 1 hit but saves. The Supreme Commander is killed by the BM.

Turn 4 Activation 11 (Alpha Legion)
The lone Light Transport fails to activate and breaks.

Turn 4 Activation 12 (Alpha Legion)
The Alpha Legion Predators doubles, fires at the Chosen and breaks them. They capture the Blitz.

Game ends 2-0 to Alpha Legion (Take and Hold + Blitz)

Really fun and quite tight game. Could easily have gone the other way had Alpha Legion not gained the initiative three turns i a row, which meant I could take the edge off a lot of engages and managed to save my BTS a number of times.

As for the Alpha Legion list, I think the Coils of the Hydra rule compensates well for not being able to summon Daemons with the Alpha Legion Marines units. They can't engage like Black Legion can, but their units are a lot harder to wipe out as well.

The Cultists are super weak in the engage unless they can get some daemons to help them and give them some armour save. Probably should have been a bit more proactive with summoning, considering that I can keep them between turns.

The Fire Raptors are perhaps a bit too nasty for their points, probably need to up them some.

I think the Destroyers work pretty well now with AP5+, AP4+ was a bit too much.

The Macharius formation performed about as well as I expected them to. Very resilient against shooting and a great support unit but they die horribly when engaged by something competent.

Having a Daemon Prince as Supreme instead of a bunch of Lords worked quite well. The Sorcerer is just a lot more useful than the Lord.

The Alpha Legion Predators is a fun unit with a lot of firepower when they get to sustain. I think they work quite well at this point.

The Lernaean Terminators in the Spartan Assault Tanks didn't really get to show what they could do. Goes to show that having a small WE as a transport can really backfire when there's Pin-Points around. On the other hand, they have incredible potential so I think this configuration is certainly an interesting BTS and a powerful alternative to teleporting or Thunderhawking.

The Thudd Guns performed about as well as I would have expected, it's a pretty big and shooty unit for the points.

Overall quite pleased with how the list is performing, hopefully Norto thinks the same!
