Got in three games with the 'nids over the weekend. For these I tried out some special rule changes:

I removed the tournament objectives and victory conditions special rules and changed Synapse Swarms to the following:

Quote:
Synapse Swarms have an initiative of 3+, may not capture or contest objectives, and count as destroyed for the purposes of tiebreak if all of their synapse units are destroyed.


This meant that the 'nids had a BTS formation like every other army, and that brood creatures in a Synapse Swarm could contest and control objectives if their synapse were alive.

Marines won in the 3rd with Take and Hold and Blitz. This was Chris's first game with the 'nids and he tried out a really huge formation of bugs.

This game can be summed up in one word - "ouch" - the Hive mind recieved a sound beating. Hive Mind to all Synapse creatures: "Get everyone into the digestive pools and let's try this spawning thing again...". I thought that I would try to take some different options and a big scary formation to draw fire...which they did too good of a job at. This game showed me that when fighting Marines, Tyranids should take artillery, teleporters, tunnelers and as many small formations as possible. That way they can assault their foes by every means possible and quickly. I think that when fighting an army with lower troop quality/initiative, the Tyranids can be a little more creative with the structure of formations. Due to the Tyranids poorer FF and the spawning rules, opponents can get into close proximity and be successful. That's my two cents worth, I had a good time regardless of the outcome.
