I'll admit I'm a little bit disappointed by the outcome

Only two units can take a Daemon Prince, Terminators and Renegade Warband

For a list that had great air assault options there is now not much point to taking a Daemon Prince in anything but the Terminator squad as the Warband now won't fit in the Thunderhawk with the upgrade

what are other people's feelings on the matter?

I was working on the fact that most daemon prince models in 40k are a similar size to a dreadnought

They take up two transport spaces in pretty well every list that lets them be transported.

Apoc has suggested that Daemon Princes should count as the number of stands the unit replaced counts as for the purposes of thunderhawk transport only.... I don't like it personally but don't see a major issue with it from a fluff or power level POV....

That just sounds overly cludgy. 2 transport slots unless wings seems just a shed-load more straight forward.

Should an 8 strong retinue (of basic or cult) marines with a prince be able to fit in a thawk within fluff, list theme, and balance restrictions? probably imo.

It is a fudge, but you either need to disallow core ret+DP flying in thawk altogether, or make an exception/fudge somewhere.

Scouts cant go in drop pods is a fudge/ list level exception. DP counting as size = the stand it replaces for Thawk transport is a list exception.

(I mean i don't actually care, im probably never going to do it – though i might if cult marines could DP – just my solution)

isn't the end goal to be that you got cult marines and a DP that can air assault? why bother with the kak of special rules and notes and exceptions. Just make the DP upgrade replace two of the regular stands (one with the lord) as a straight swap?

That's another nice idea. would it replace two stands in terminators? or only in cult/regular? i think you still end up with case-by-case exceptions?

(don't personally see the thawk size point as a massive 'special rule' obstacle, just a note like no marine scouts in drop pods)

While we're at it – any reason the bikers cant take a winged demon price? :)

well in this case I was strictly speaking of the cult marines. I wouldn't even have it be an upgrade, just the formation option. 8 cult or 6 + DP for a straight cost. The termies would be the one I suspect, yeah?

This is more just reflecting how I'm starting to become very not enamored of the whole upgrade system in practice as opposed to building in a bit more flexibility in the formation compositions on lists themselves. Not advocating doing away with them as a concept, just that not everything, especially ones with hard to slot in units, need to always be an upgrade.

edit: Winged DP + Bikers? Hellz yeah!

I'm of the opinion still that thematically you should be able to have the daemon prince upgrade and the whole warband fit in the TH. - Take his wings away for this option if you have to.

I'm not a fan of having to go to the cult marine unit to get access to a non terminator Daemon Prince.
Nor am i of the favor that you would have to give up two stands for 1 Daemon Prince stand
