Well, i know several people are looking forward to seeing my Crimson Fists the tournaments this year and I'm currently trying to pull a 3k list together. Now, in the name of secrecy i'm not just gonna put up the lists i've been considering but i could really do with some advice on making a fun, competitive, non typical list to play with...i don't know if such a thing exists!

Basically i see the options as either being 3 warhounds and multiple t.hawks etc, or a drop pod/air assault list; all of these seem to be pretty one trick ponies; turn one wins are unlikely with the calibre of players over here!
T.bolts are probably pretty neccasary, i don't think pure ground pounding marines is going to work either.

I've written a couple of lists focusing around either pure air assualt using 3 transport aircraft, or drop pods and transports, with multiple terminators teleporting in; both lists seem pretty fragile at the moment...so hints and tips, novel ideas etc are welcomed; alas for i lack a Reaver, and if it weren't for the fact that i DO so want to field my marines at least once i'd be playing guard (which are being lent to a mate for feburary's tourney)

Hayulp!

What about a Marine Armour list?  Scions-like, if they aren't allowed in your tourney...

Lotsa Razorbacks, Preds, Vindies, supporting Tacs and Devs, all rumbling forward under T-Bolt air cover... that 750+ points of Warhounds could buy you some nice Marines toys!

It certainly would be different from the ol' Air Drop!

It all comes down to the choice of competitive or fluffy with marines, there is no middle ground.

As you say to be competitive its an air assault, terminator list with warhounds. The drop option is ok but the air assault is usually better.

I'll also add that even if you go for the ultimate list I've never found it that easy to win with.

Before I get howls of protest all the comments above relate to tournaments in the UK over the last 3 years were marine armies have been fielded.

Sorry Chroma the lists for FSA are set at GW official only.

Don't worry, I keep on trying out different ideas for my marines and none of them come off at all. I was also thinking of taking Marines to the next tournament, but I don't want to be the recepient of the Dice of Dave.

That's why I said "Scions-like"... so, mech armour focused Marines, instead of the drops.

I apologise Chroma, I misread that as "scions, if they ARE allowed". I'll stop speed reading  :vo

Since the Reaver has been upgraded more marine lists are appearing with those, but they still have the air assault, terminator troops as their backup.

The last army with multiple armour formations I remember was Hymril's at the WPSCC in 07 were his record was perfect..... 0-5!

My marine army for FSA will not have titans, but then I don't expect to finish in the top half anyway  :))

3K competitive (imho) primarily ground marine list:

Tacs + 5 razorbacks + Hunter (500 - BTS)
Tacs + SC + Hunter (475)
Bikes + Chaplain (250)
Bikes (200)
Speeders + Librarian (250)
Speeders (200)
Terminators (325)
Thawk w/ 2x Assault Marines + Chaplains (650)
Tbolts (150)

8 activations and that will likely increase after the air assault, depending on what survives.  Termies will also add an activation at some point.

Tacs are your anchors.  The Tac formation with Razorbacks can put out a decent base of fire.  The SC can provide an option for combined assaults if you keep bikes or speeders nearby.  Speeders and bikes work in tandem with the classic move/shoot/support from Speeders, assault with the Bikes.  Thawk can pounce on something first turn if the enemy makes a deployment mistake or extends something too far.  Be patient and just use it to strafe if you can't find a good target.  Treat the Termies the same way.  Turn 2 or 3 often gives much better options.

If you face something really big, Speeders' MW FF support and Termies' MWCC will throw a lot of MW on a target.

If you're going with tourney mods, you'll need to shave 25 points for the Terminators due to the point increase.

I'm a bit of a painting purist i'm afraid;the offer ofa reaver is very much appreciated but i think my Fists deserve to be all my own work for this one :-)

So; terminators are officially up to 350pts?

I'm curently looking at a triumverate of warhounds, single terminators, a big air assault bunch, with mechanised tacticals and scouts to run alonside the warhounds.

I WOULD like to field something armor based; i even considered:
-Terminators
-Terminators
-Warhound
-Warhound
-T.bolts
-T.bolts
-Land Raiders
-Land Raiders +Hunter
-Tacticals +Supreme +Hunter +Razorback
-Scouts +razorback
HOWEVER: a standard marine tank based army isn't going to get me anywhere, and i don't have enought razorbacks for hena's suggestion :-(

I played a variant of the following list recently vs. Ulthwé, and happened to dominate the field via the artillery and the Warlord:

850 warlord
150 t-bolts
300 wwinds
300 wwinds
200 scouts+snipers
200 scouts+snipers
550 tactical, 3xTLC-RB, SC, hunter
450 tactical, 3xTLC-RB, hunter

Turns out the Eldar couldn´t advance their Guardians without risking the Farseers, were terrified of leaving any armour where the Warlord could see them, couldn´t bunch armour behind terrain as the Whirlwinds would get them, couldn´t put a Phantom with Powerfist to proper use, again due to the Warlord.

Instead, the Marines advanced well covered, easily clearing the objectives. It was so bad that the Eldar called the game after T2, we actually had the Phantom advance into a useful position thereafter, demolishing but not breaking a Tactical, only to be blown to smithereens by the Warlord.

This is my current list of choice. It hits pretty hard going in and
then keeps you on a wild ride the rest of the game.

Its a "fluffy" list, but has done well against SM, IG and Tau, struggles against
Saim Hann Eldar (probably other flavors as well), and has been "Morked" by
the greenies.

I am under no illusions that it is a tournament killing list, but it does
make an impression and keeps me pretty engaged protecting all that geneseed
the entire game.

I do think that some of the other lists that are posted are very interesting
looking.

I will say that the transported units in the Landing Craft is a new mix
for me as I just got some vindis, so this version is a little harder
hitting in the air assault and there are more points being carried than
in the past.

A1
200 Strike Cruiser
350 Landing Craft

In Landing Craft
325 1 x Devastator, 1 x Librarian, 1 x Razorback
275 Vindicators
450 1 x Terminator, SupremeCommander

Teleport
350 1 x Terminator

In Drop Pods
350 1 x Tacticals, 1 x Dread
350 1 x Tacticals, 1 x Dread
350 1 x Tacticals, 1 x Dread
200 Thunderhawk

3000
