Hello, ive started a 6mm project and im looking for advice, inspiration on how to make my bases more interesting. In 28mm i use scenery and skulls and things, but im struggling here.
Its Mars themed so flock isnt really an option. And im using round bases if it makes a difference.

I have used a mix of fine sand and cat litter (the cheap, clay type) and then painted it bright colours to be alien planets. The sand came from a local beach, was then boiled in a pan of water and left to dry.

The other thing some of the guys on here with more talent then I have done is put the small plastic ruins, or even cut the stand off of individual minis and glued them down to the base and painted them to look like casualties.

Some of the bigger models (the SHT and Titans) look good with damaged/destroyed vehicles on their base such as an old Rhino etc

I don't normally do much to Infantry bases. But I did do a little with some …

Cork bits make fantastic rubble or rocks (largely dependant on how you break it up and paint the base). Textured please sheets give huge amounts of possibilities for urban bases. Learn to love textured paint. Get some Vallejo Sandy paste- in 5 years I've gone through only 2/5th of it. Sprue bits can be used to make walls and the like easily. Small bits of razor wire strands and modeling Moss tuffs, easily accessible from any hobby store/shop/manufacturer are good for ummmph.

Thanks for the input guys. I like the idea of using cork or cat litter as rubble, as this is something i do in 28mm. i will try to experiment with those.

Ive also decided to try to use wire to simulate pipes on some of the sparse infantry bases. I will take some wip shots and post some pics asap.

Since it’s supposed to be a mars terrain, if you modeling skills are up to it, could add little Curiosity Rovers to a few of them.

That GW specialist paint that dries cracked looks good. Google image search 'martian bases' or similar and see what people have come up with e.g. this one was good I thought https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/c ... s_for_the/

Hi folks, thanks for all the replys.

Im actually quite confident in the basing paint scheme im doing. I have a large 28mm admech army (@arcade81 for images). Im looking for details to add to the bases to give them more life. Industrial sector, ruins, rubble, pipes, skulls that sort of thing.

My theme is a 40k forgeworld (not actually mars).

I think i will continue browsing for inspiration.

Vanguard as said above have the novan artillery bits etc, Also another very good place is perfect6scenery

They sell 6mm boxes, ammo crates, fuel cans, oil drums etc.

A good base work i have found and use myself is very fine railway ballast, mixed with a larger ballast for
contrast, use the black and dry brush a colur over it, such as sand colour or grey etc, The paint highlights show up with the colour, leaving the black ballast bits showing through.

Easy to apply and does not get dusty etc like using flock etc. ;)
