So I said id do some comparison shots, and ive got a few here.
So these are the Vanguard Meganob proxies next to my own mega nobz. I should note its not really fair that the Vanguard ones arent painted but im very slow and didnt have time for it. I was surprised that my Nobz were pretty much the same height/size as the vanguard ones as I scaled mine for baccus or 8mm
But theres alot of things that I mentioned previously to go over here, for my own education anyway. Firstly the Vanguard model really plays with proportions in the way I mentioned previously which I like and I actually really like the way the vanguard models look. Im not sure I would change my models now at this point because I think its something you have to consider from the start instead of changing later.
That said my models are more detailed, more realistically proportioned, I also like my poseing far better. That said I honestly dont think my models are better, at least not for the average game. Looking at these models from a distance in fact the Vanguard models might even look better when painted and in groups. So I think for the vast majority of 6mm players (IE not me who does alot of Role Play too) the vanguard might be preferable. In fact the only time I see my models as better would be for maybe Dioramas or again role play. As it stands currently though because I get my own through shapeways they are prohibitively expensive. So while I am slightly discouraged at how much effort was perhaps wasted I also think this is very valuable information for future modeling endeavors with 3d for 6mm
So that said I want to talk about my newest endeavor, spurred on by my latest Vanguard purchase also. So their Eldar proxies are as ive said great, easily best on the market. I want to link one good paintjob I saw of them, I again cant recall where I got this image. Apologies.
But I really dig the way they look there as a unit, which is perhaps the most important thing for 6mm models. For me however I find I have some major qualms with these guys, admittedly I think this is only going to effect me with my OCD and maybe apparently McJakub XD
They arent as detailed as I would like, and perhaps more grievously they are just slightly off in certain ways. The largest offenders for me are the helmet and butt. The helm I think is actually maybe inspired by older eldar styles? which is fine but I grew up with the newer style or perhaps prefer them so its just aesthetically something that bugs me. And the butt armour on these guys!! I cant quite describe it fully but it really bugs me!
and their posing, maybe its apparent with my mega nobz and the astartes figs I like, but I enjoy really natural and expressive poses, and especially variety. These guys do have variety especially for 6mm guys but I just find myself not thrilled with their poseing.
All that said I dont want it to sound like they are bad miniatures, like Mcjakub said. Its just that I am incredibally OCD and anal about this stuff! XD
so anyway I started on making a Guardian Armature for myself that will hopefully incorporate things ive now learned from modeling at this scale.
This is a few hours worth of work so far and to be honest the most work is proportions and getting things right for the scale. ESPECIALLY as I dont have a way of printing these guys out to test how they look before I commit to a size ratio, so its ALOT of guesstimation which im not sure I like, or rather its just slowing my process. But I really would like comments or specificalyl criticisms of this build.
Oh and yes the kneepads are different sizes, its one of the many things keeping me annoyed as to what size I should make them Xd
Obviously its still WIP
