I used magnets originally in my SM flyters (THawk, LC and TBolts). They broke a couple of times in the 7+ years I've been using them. Usually when that happened paint came off and they were a pain to get back together. The Hawk widgets haven't broken yet, but I don't think I'll have that issue with them if/when they do. Likely that's do to putting them off after the paint (because they're clear). I glued the magnets in before I painted.
My $0.02 USD anyway. Having used both I think the widgets are the better way to go.

i would suspect that the greater stability and the slight give of the widget would be longer lasting. The note about the tipping is more for people already invested in the more commonly found embedded rare earth magnets.
I must admit also that the product P linked above is making me rethink the stands on my IA flyers.

Having spent inordinate amounts of money on Hawk's widgets, and mounting them to everything from Fighta Bombers, Thunderbolts and Landing Craft, through to Emperor Battleships, SM Battle Barges and every size of Firestorm Armada and DFC vessel going, I can honestly say I've never found a gaming 'accessory' as useful as they have been to my flyer basing efforts.

Using widgets is pretty basic and really just common sense. The widget itself comes as a socket with a nub to help in that regard, which is coincidentally (I'm sure) about the same size as the holes commonly found on the underneath of 2000's GW's models. With virtually no modification you can stick those into models in the same place as you'd attach a magnet or mount any other flight stand.
Increasing the surface area contact between widget and model is, as ever, key. Once that's secure you can pop them on and off acrylic or brass rods as much as you want, for transport, storage or just to interchange bases as need arises. The widget is a slightly soft plastic, harder than the usual FFG soft plastic, but squishier than your traditional plastic kit, helps the stand squeeze in and stay secure with really no work whatsoever.
The only drawback is you have to be willing to have the (slightly frosted) clear plastic widget hanging off the bottom of your model. Magnets are somewhat more expensive, more prone to failing it knocked but tend to be more concealable as a solution. Your priorities may differ, but for the ease of use/transport/storage? I use the widgets without another thought.
Edited for random terrible pictures. One Marauder with widget (attached before priming, shame on me). As you can see it holds upside down with a standard GW plastic flight stand perfectly well and when upright it's basically invisible to a normal gaming angle. As Dave suggests above though, you'd be better served by attaching widgets AFTER priming/painting.
