The pics with the flash show up better but tend to be washed out, don't you have a lamp you can place nearby to illuminate the models without resorting to the flash?

Check your exposure and white balance as well. Most phone cameras at this point even have easy to use pre settings

Been experimenting with the lamp suggestion and I reckon that might be the winner, will try it next time I make a blog post, thanks for the advice chaps

One important tip. Keep light shining roughly the same way as you are pointing the camera. There seemed to be more powerful light behind the
minis at times. This creates dark shadows.
