Firstly allow me to say: I am not a painter. I just don't have the patience (which includes patience to acquire the skill). My choices in colour schemes therefore largely centre around what is quick to do.

That said, I have resolved to occasionally out in a bit more effort, so will try to make things less crap than normal for my Tau army.

Here are my first two formations:

Crisis suits:

For someone who doesn't like to paint, those look great. For me, painting at 6mm is all about a quick, easy scheme that unifies the army. Save the fancy stuff for one or two bling units!

For a non-painter, you paint really good. Good choice of colours and I think you have picked out the right details for different colours. They look great, and an army painted to this standard will look spectacular.

Never mind 'for a non-painter'. These are just good, plain and simple.

I think most of us make compromises when painting armies. There's a balance to be struck between getting the models looking as good as possible and having a paint scheme that we can actually apply to however many dozen models before we just want to cry and give up painting forever. Where the balance is found will vary from person to person but if you can sustain this quality for a whole army then you'll be doing better than a lot of people.

Thanks for the kind words folks!

This is the first couple of units from fire warrior and stealth formations taken from above. I include these to explain a couple of things...

The bases are custom laser cut jobs, there are various sizes and shapes, all with a vague "manta ray/aquatic" aesthetic. I designed them to fit the units that will use them, and where appropriate to tessellate (fit together). Each base has two layers: the top is MDF, the bottom is a flexible metallic material. The idea is they can be stored on magnetic sheet trays, and allow for removable characters on disc magnets (not tried this yet).

Second, I have included the occasional pool of toxic junk. There are actually a couple on the crisis and broadsides but they aren't as visible and didn't come out as well unfortunately. It took me quite a few experiments to do these before settling on this method, which is:
1. Build a "border" of milliput
2. coat d'arms bogey green in the middle
3. Cover with 2 part epoxy glue
Quite simple but epoxy is very thick and dries fairly quickly so not easy. To be honest I only did this because I think I've failed to make the bases with enough contrast and it probably wasn't worth it ;)

Edited to add: you can't really see the water effect in the photo, IMO it looks a lot better in real life but like I say, not sure it's worth the effort.

Thanks everyone, my enthusiasm is sure to fade at some point and descend to "oh that'll do" but I'm trying!

No, I designed them and then they were kindly laser cut by our very own tc63. I had contacted Fenris initially but Ian didn't get back to me in the end. I gather they have been rather busy of late.
