Why is it that every time I look at an army and want to comment that it looks really impressive I find the painter himself says they're not good? Maybe it's just me.

Anyway, they're good stuff! Considering that white as a basecoat is a nightmare generally, and even worse when combined with red detailing, they're super. The bases look simply but effectively done. I think the colour choices and technique of the bases contributes to the overall look, making each a pleasing unit.

Speaking of the bases and on the subject of weathering and land raiders - would basing the vehicles and adding a little weathering from your reddish sand base colours help break up the flat vehicles somewhat?

Well thanks. It's all relative I suppose isn't it? In my case I'm lucky/unlucky enough to have played a heap of games this year with Apoc so one can't help but develop an inferiority complex

I am considering basing all the vehicles actually, my issue is mainly with the land raiders; having gone for round is fine for the smaller vehicles - magnetic coins - but they are not so good for gameplay as they get larger. LR geometry means larger bases, 40mm covers the tank but that is warhound size. I still intend to test some sizes to see if I can find one I'm happy with though.

Oval? Not far from a rounded rectangular base though, just enough to match the rounded look of other stuff, but with an aspect to fit better than the round bases. I'm sure some MDF base supplier could manage a custom order.

I like your thinking, I have seen some ovals usually in larger sizes but I am sure I can get something custom. For the quantity I need I can probably make some.

I could swear fenris has reasonable sized/costed oval mdf bases already in the normal catalog.

Last I heard from Fenris they weren't doing laser-cut MDF any more as they had no access to the machine, but that was months ago, when I was looking to get a big bag of custom hex bases cut.

Decided to do some landspeeders instead of the land raiders, I figure they are more useful.

It took me a while to finish an actual formation because I am prone to attempting to paint the same colour across lots of models. Supoosedly "for efficiency" but I've noticed it means I a) don't finish stuff and b) forget what I've done and what I've not. Need to stop doing this.
