Umm, sniff, I hate to be the one to point it out to you, but, umm, sniff, your Deathguard is wearing the wrong armor Mark. Sniff Mark 7 armor was only issued in very limited numbers at the very end of, sniff, the Horus Heresy, and sniff, Deathguard would never have received it sniff due to their predilection for Mark II Crusade armor sniff and their turning from the Emperor (blessed be his name!)

Sniff. ;D

Great job - I really like the Spartan. I also like your ruins - I am a total sucker for well painted terrain.

It's been a while since the last update - trying to paint while watching the World Cup was simply impossible ;)

In spite of all that football-induced stress, the Death Guard did get some new recruits. First of all, I finished the Heavy Support detachment:

The 'vintage' Jetbike detachment

And finally a Land Raider squadron.

To be honest, I've had enough of painting white for a while. So next up will be some black. With a red trim...

Seriously those old poop raiders look grand. Your technique really looks like an oil pin wash but I'm curious about your actual approach

Recipe for the white (which is pretty simple, but takes ages because of the highlights :P ):
- Dheneb stone basecoat
- Devlan mud wash
- First highlight with dheneb stone/white mix
- Second highlight with pure white
- Gryphonne sepia glaze

Green is just catachan green basecoat with a catachan/camo green highlight, followed by a pure camo green extreme highlight.

Metal is Boltgun metal, devlan mud wash, badab black wash, chainmail highlight, sepia glaze.

Your white is also exactly what I do on my guard but unlike yours, mine is an accent color so I don't mind the time. It must take ages on your DG, mate! Might want to try a test stand with oils just so you don't burn out! :)

regardless, great work!

Whiskey,

Great work mate, you have done a marvellous job on the old plastic raiders, never thought they could look that good.

Think we need a whole army shot my friend.

Cheers
Aaron

I don't want to sidetrack this awesome thread that should be focused on the kick ass DG you have going on but in short, oils have some very interesting and exceptionally fantastic techniques available to them. For one, oils in washes and filters do not act the same as acrylics; You can continue to manipulate it after it "dries" by the addition of thinner (white spirit/odorless thinner). In addition, you don't like it or made a mistake in application (over brush/application) you can just wash it right off with thinner and start over. Specifically on those tanks and infantry you can do point washes very easily by taking some black or soot oil paint and add various amounts of burnt umber or other color to get the tone you want, thin it with the white spirit and simply touch the brush to the panel edges and joints and the capillary action will take it off the brush and right into the creases. Since 6mm works better with deeper washes and stronger highlights IMHO you can fiddle with higher concentrations of paint to thinner to get the consistency that works for you. The best thing is that if you get it where you don't want it, just clean it up with a brush (synthetics only) dampened with the thinner. No more MUST BE EXACTLY PERFECT HAND CONTROL required. In fact, be messy and clean up later. For the infantry scale I expect a straight up wash all over would do the trick but experiment until you find what works for you. Also, whole model washes with oils tend to give very smooth gradients to the shading. (example: http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=24654&start=110) The oil equivalent (or the closest equivalent I would say) to an acrylic glaze would be doing a filter (works great with larger models/areas) to deepen tone, allow small color variations on flats panels to break up mono-tones, etc. One those Raiders a very thin filter and then a wide brush damp with thinner would work awesome I expect.

Not specifically talking about 6mm but here's a good video that you can watch that clearly shows the basics and purposes of these techniques that honestly after watching you'll grok it and could get you going in minutes testing this out and adding it to your repertoire of techniques. I can always talk off line about this stuff or another thread as well. :)

Thanks for your extensive answer, looks like an interesting technique (and some great-looking tanks, too!). I especially like the "No more MUST BE EXACTLY PERFECT HAND CONTROL required" part, that would save me hours of painting time. I have some holidays coming up, so I'll be sure to give it a try - thanks again 8)
