Bit of a necro but I just spent an afternoon going through all 29 pages of the thread.

Time well spent, fantastic work and inspirational!

Thank's bdave351.
That reminds me to post some new images.

I did some Squats to check the army list.

I startet with Iron Eagles, because it was the unit I had a vision of. It should be more like a Russian Battle Helicopter, less like a Fantasy Dwarf Airboat.

The images show the models larger than life. They are painted in blocky colors and washed liberally to show the detail. They are still glossy. This might change in the future. I might also try to get rid of the puddles of wash.

Image
I gave the models all the main armament they have according to the army list.

This shows prominently with the overlord.

It's basically 2 Iron Eagles joined and stretched. The composition has been converted to a Quadcopter, giving it a distinct shape.

I like the the Thunderfire cannons. They a surprisingly versatile. Looking at the stats, they remind me of an 88.
They look the part. They are very high, because the models are designed so that the barrel could point straight to heaven. The barrel did pivot and swivel until I trenched it with wash. The models had been designed ahead of the infantry, so there is no crew yet.
The Rhino is a standard Rhino, without insignia.

First Warengine would be the Mega Cannon. This is the second try. The first one was more like an armoured howitzer. It was terrible. This design looks more like a Macro Cannon and still looks fragile enough to show why it has a save of 6+ besides being a gigantic warmachine.

The other warengine is the Leviathan.
Image

Like the other miniatures the model features all the main weapons listed in the profile. The battle cannon is mounted in an modified Predator turret. The twin Lascannons and mounts are from the Landraider. The Main Cannon ist derived from the Mega Cannon.
The chassis itself is a stretched Landraider chassis with a custom superstructure to hold the MegaCannon and give some additional space for passengers. This creates a familiar imperial look.

The infantry is really squat. They are much wider and shorter than ordinary infantry models.
I decided to do them as "ordinary" semi-modern infantry, no Dwarfs and no Southern Bikers. They carry Lasguns and Missile Launchers.
The 6+ save is due to a flak vest.
There are 6 different models in total, 3 with Lasguns and 3 with Missile Launchers.
The Hearthguard models have a slightly better armor, but are no Marines. They have no Missile Launchers nor Lasguns, but some short ranged weapon.
I gave them a rather stiff round armor thing reminiscent of WWI armor, and the helmet is no longer open, but has a metal visor.

I put the LasCannon of the Rapier on a chassis which is remote controlled by an soldier. He is joined by two comrades to fill up the base.
The Warlord stand consists of a Heartguard weaponsteam (2 guys and an Autocannon) and two guys in traditional costume.

That's what I have so far. It is not so much driven by army composition, but models printed per print run.

Have a nice weekend.

Wow great looking army!
I particularly like your vision of the squat fliers.
Too late now since you’ve built and painted two already, but the only modification I’d suggest on the war engines is to have the battle cannon turret sit more flush, or build up a trurret ring on which to mount it.

A fascinatng thread with some superb models. Top notch painting as well.

As this is something I might be tempted to dabble in, I did wonder how long (roughly) it
takes to create a design for a vehicle ? I assume this timeframe reduces as you get more
experienced but it would be interesting to get an idea.

Many thanks,

Phil

@glorfindel
There is no simple rule.
Depending on complexity, parts you can reuse, clarity of what the model shall look like, number of iterations, a day or two including printing the first set of tanks. A day being anything from 4 to 10 hours. In some cases add some overnight printing. In hours it would be between 4 and 20 hours. More than half of it design time. How much depends on the number of iterations and size of the model.

Design speed improves with practice and numbers of errors made - if you manage to make each error only once.

Don't know what your times will be at start. If you have no 3D Design experience, you will have to invest some time in learning the Modeler (3D Design App) first, even have to invest some time in choosing a Modeler. Have the first batch of models printed by an service like Shapeways, to save you the hassle to get the printer working and the model printed on that same printer.

IMHO if you have to think about how long it might take to design a model, instead of burning to do it, leave it alone, it's not worth the hassle.

as always, great work!

love your leviathan, are there plans for land train too?

@rubberlizard

Yes. That's what it looks like now. But it's work in progress. I like the engine, but the carriages do not make much sense.
The train is not nimble enough to warrant a fire arc of 360 degrees without a turret of sorts. Even with a turret it will well-nigh be impossible to get 360 degrees. But with separate turrets it is impossible.

Very nice!

How much support did you use for the big front gun, or is it multipart?

Basically none. There is one, but it's not really needed. I put it there for ease of mind.
