Inspirational stuff. With the fine detail you are able to achieve, I wonder if you could create 'Chapter specific'
raised symbols on the doors etc ?

Yes I still use a B9 Creator. Those models are printed at 30µm, while most other models are printed at 50µm.

@glorfindel
Depends on.
All imperial eagles on the model are 3d printed and are not decals.

The second picture on page 27 shows a black cat and a raven 3D printed on the hunters.
The black cat is silhouette with eyes only, while the raven has feathers like the imperial eagle. The raven is more detailed than the photograph suggests - and the black thing with the big eyes is a cat and no owl.

As a rule of thumb ( for my printer, determined empirically) a raised feature has to be 0.2mm (200µm) wide. On some opportune places 150µm might work.
A groove has to be 0.3mm (300µm) wide. If it is a shallow groove only, you'll manage 250µm and on opportune places 200µm.
There are tricks to get even finer structures for say motor grills. But they are not well suited for icons.

0.2 and 0.3 mm does not sound much, but if the top cover of an heavy bolter is less than 6mm long, even 4 grooves will use up 1.8 mm. So you might have to restrict the number of grooves to prevent them running into other features or looking to dominating.

It's difficult to judge the minimum feature/groove size of a laser printer, because multiple dots are combined to form a "pixel on paper". But somewhere between 80 and 150µm should be possible with a good laser printer.
Again the grooves seem to be the problem. It seems that unprinted parts have to have a bigger minimum size to stay visible than their printed counterparts.

[Edit]
PS:
You might technically get finer raised structures, but you want to see them and to survive handling.

Great results. How many hours do you spend to get such results?

@Bogenverleih

One Land Raider or any two of the others print in less than 2 hours, a Warhound in 3 to 4 hours.

Design time is difficult to judge and varies depending on the complexity of the model, whether it has to resemble some "original" or if I start with a concept only.

I might have done a simple Land Raider in a day. On a highly detailed one, which shall be close to the original, that time will be spent on test prints alone.
When designing the model it will be shown on screen more than 30 times as large as the model. Some things will look different when printed and some things I (personal quirk) will only note when I paint a model.

Modelling (the design obviously exists already) the Land Raider probably took 4 days. Now being familiar with the model, I could probably do it in a day. Variants - like modelling a Predator after having modelled a Rhino - takes not surprisingly much less time. In average I'd say a variant a day - except if you try something that's new for you like smoke etc.

Someone new to modelling and 3d printing will need a multiple of time. If you plan to model yourself, I advise to try to model a miniature and see how it goes before buying any 3D printer.

Printing the tanks once the modelling is done is no time issue, as you can paint on set of models while the next batch prints.

Thanks for explaining that so detailed. To be honest, i have no clue of any of the processes you need for this. I m happy i got some experience with casting, but 3d sculpting and printing is nothing i would even think about. I was just curious, to get an idea.

Again, great work. Hope to see those in flesh one day

Hi! I'm new to this forum (but been stalking on/off for a while) And I just finished reading through this blog. Every single post of it. And looking through the relevant parts of your website. NICE!
I really like the sense of evolution in it too, and as I just ordered one (well, actually two, but who's counting?) 3d printer, to do basically the same thing, it really hit the spot for me.

I got a Ultimaker2. And a Sparkmaker from kickstarter. (well, hopefully, it's a kickstarter...) Yeah, as soon as I get home and have time for it, I'll be printing day and night. That means, in best case scenario, before X-mas!

Back to the Orks.
I usually don't bother with Buggys. A factor not to be ignored is the fact that I do not have any models.

Here is my first try:
